Museums? The Neon museum is pretty cool if you like hearing about the old casinos in Vegas. The Mob Museum is just excellent all around. I've been wanting to check out the Atomic testing museum, but haven't had a chance yet. I hear it's alright.

I really enjoyed "Love" and I think anyone who enjoys The Beatles and/or fun will like it. I also liked Penn and Teller, if that's your sort of thing.

The High Roller is touristy, but fun.

I really want to try Dune Buggies and scooters through Red Rock. I haven't done it yet, but I think the companies I liked were recommended in this thread. You could also just hike Red Rock.

If you liked Roos, maybe you can check out the Lion Habitat Ranch? Again, I've never done it, but it looks neat.

Just got back from Vegas for my wife's 30th. Stayed at the Cosmo in a Junior suite with views over Bellagio fountains, we were on the 68th floor and had some amazing views of the strip.

Absinthe was really good, we had one of the tables at the front of the back section and had an awesome view of the stage, the acrobatics is really impressive and the hosts are hilarious.

Tiesto @ Hakkasan on a Thursday, if you don't want to do bottle service the VIP bar card is well worth doing, it costs $100 per person, you get free entry, queue jump and a card with $100 of bar credit on it, it's a no-brainer. Drinks in there were expensive though, my first round between two of us came to over $90. Getting on the dance floor was also a PITA, but the wife sweet-talked the dance floor bouncer and we got down there. Positives though are that the dance floor isn't too crowded and you can get right up to the DJ booth.

Went to Armin Van Buuren at Omnia on a Saturday, we got guest list from a host but still had to queue for nearly 2 hours as we turned up at 2245 which was a ballache. We preferred Hakkasan over Omnia.

Heli ride to the Grand Canyon was awesome, limo pick up/drop off from the hotel, and they arranged a birthday cake for my wife when we landed on the Canyon floor which was cool.

Gambling on the $5 tables down at Fremont street was a good time and they had some Hair Metal 80s tribute band on one of the outdoor stages which was fun.

Mac King's comedy magic show was a nice way to spend a few hours in the afternoon but the tricks are a bit dated and the comedy isn't great, would be better if you had kids i think.

We did the tasting menu at Rose.Rabbit.Lie which was pretty good, some courses were amazing (caviar tacos), some were not so good (Beef Wellington), but was a cool atmosphere and there were plenty of courses and variety.

Eggslut and the Secret Pizza place at the Cosmo were also good for snack food.

All in all we had an awesome time, but i'm shattered now.

I went there last year. Definitely a cool museum and good way to get out of the heat for an hour or two. I personally started to get a little bored with it halfway through and just walked through the second half without really reading anything. Probably a lot more interesting if you're into really into nuke science/engineering. The museum is a lot bigger than I thought it would be.

The area 51 "museum" that's next to it is kinda lol, power walked straight through that one.

I did Red Rocks with Scoot City Tours. The little cars were a lot of fun to drive. They do pick up and drop-off from your hotel and the tour guides were super friendly and accommodating. There's a groupon for 20% off here: https://www.groupon.com/deals/scoot-city-3.

Anyone know of any good cocktail bars on the strip?

(Or a poker room that can actually make a decent drink?)

I like Manhattans, which are easy to do badly. Totally willing to pay if needed though if I can find a casino that would bring me one during poker I might just live there...

Edit: Also any good dive suggestions? I usually go to Stage Door for booze and Ellis Island for steak n' eggs.

The Cosmopolitan has lots of good cocktail places. The Chandelier Bar is neat, and there are different cocktails on every floor. Beauty & Essex is speakeasy style with more classic cocktails, and is nice.

I also highly recommend the Mandarin Cocktail Bar for tasty cocktails and excellent views.

Poker room drinks are universally terrible. Stick to very simple things when you order there. Anything with more than 2 ingredients is probably a mistake.

If you want a double, ask for a single and a side shot.

Haha, nice... that feels like ordering a pizza that comes with a free topping and requesting the topping be "another pizza".

Honestly I like stuff I can sip that's not beer and poker wine is probably on par with communion wine...

Yeah, I pretty much stick to Rum and Cokes, Jack and Gingers, Baileys Coffees, and White Russians. Anything more complicated than those will probably get you funny looks from the cocktail runners and lovely, hurried terribleness from the overworked bartenders.

Are there any places with more unique/experimental drinks? Like mixed with centrifuges and stuff lol. My friend is into those too although I'm definitely more of a traditional cocktail guy.

I'm planning a trip in September. Booked three nights at the Luxor (not what I would usually do, but I hit a rate that I couldn't pass up). I'm thinking of also spending one night downtown just so I can wander around and drink while enjoying Fremont. What would be the recommended hotel for staying downtown? Don't really care about amenities, just so long as its cheap, clean and not a complete shithole.

Also, is Blue Man Group more or less boring than Jabawoceez? I saw Jabawoceez last year to kill some time, and while it was an enjoyable show it didn't really feel like it deserved 50 of my American dollars. It was nice, but the level of performance wasn't that impressive (like watching backup dancers in a hiphop music video where they're trying not to distract from the rapper's strutting). I haven't seen Blue Man Group yet, but I saw a few clips on youtube and wasn't impressed. Is it really just 90 minutes of them drumming and flailing their arms with dopey voice-overs and projections?

Golden Nugget is cheap-ish, right on Freemont, and a pretty solid casino in itself. Plus their pool is really cool. If I wasn't attending a conference on the strip, I would probably stay there for a vacation.

(This is coming from a guy who usually stays in the Flamingo - I don't have high standards :) )

BMG must be really poo poo then, because I saw Penn and Teller last year and they were a huge disappointment. I've seen their TV specials and really liked their acts but the show they're putting on now in Vegas is just pathetic. Each "trick" was just ten minutes of Penn blathering on about some political or religious thing then at the end going "Ta-da, we made a woman appear from nowhere (please ignore the giant prop on the middle of the stage that doesn't even hide the fact that a woman would fit in there)". They no-kidding spent 10 minutes doing the old torn and restored newspaper trick while Penn read satirical news headlines. Not even really clever, it was like South Park level humor. In the whole 90 minutes they only did 8 or 9 tricks, half of which were things that you would find in a kid's "Learn To Be A Magician" book.

Mac King and Nathan Burton completely blow Penn and Teller out of the water.

Thanks for the hotel recommendations though!

One more rec for the Golden Nugget from someone who always stays downtown. Plaza is also plenty fine, although definitely one step down. I understand the Downtown Grand is also nice enough as a hotel, although the location's a little off and I've never stayed there myself.

Steak and eggs at Ellis Island is good but looking for something a little better.

Also looking for reccomendations on newbie friendly poker rooms (probably avoiding Aria and other high end so I don't get hammered by pros) and someplace with old school slots (spitting nickels.)

It's probably too early to tell. Right now (via SeatGeek) opening week nosebleeds are ~$100 each. As the season goes on, and we keep sucking then more season tickets will probably flood the market and everything will drop. Prices will also correlate with typical Vegas prices. I'm sure the maple leafs game will be one of the most expensive as it's on NYE.

One issue is if there will be a legal place for tourists to consume. The law forbids public consumption, so no lighting a joint on Fremont Street. Most of the big casino hotels were against legalization, so I doubt they will allow consumption in their hotel rooms. I don't know of any clubs that permit it. As a practical matter, I don't know how strictly the relevant parties will enforce this, but theoretically a hotel could kick out a guest or even call police if the housekeeper finds a roach or an edibles wrapper in the trash.

That's not accurate. Most hotels ban it because they're attached to casinos. (Which are federally regulated and thus risk averse)

A hotel room is a form of legal residence. (That's why if you own a gun, you can store it in your hotel room legally- it's your temporary residence). It's not illegal to smoke in your hotel.

I suspect 420 friendly AirBnBs will become popular. And like in Denver, many hotels will adopt a policy you can smoke in smoking rooms.

They're also planning a law to allow Amsterdam style cafès apparently.

How are they federally regulated? I thought it was mostly the Nevada Gaming Control Board. I mean, they have the same high dollar reporting requirements as any other business but I didn't think there was anything more specific.

Well, and worrying about the Feds putting pressure on their banks like happens for other pot-related businesses, but that seems less likely if they aren't selling.

The "coffeeshops" tend to be dark, seedy, and kind of cramped with uncomfortable seating, you really have to research to find a non-touristy one.

The weed is kind of dry IMHO - Denver has fresher + better selection.

And their edible game is weak, usually vaguely labeled "space cakes" rather than a specific MG of THC labeling system like legal states over here.

It is a great city, very beautiful, several great museums.

It would be worth a visit without the weed IMHO.
