WhiskeyWhiskers posted:They're trying to get the last dregs out of it that they can, so prices are either about to skyrocket or they already have and we're about to crash. The, 'it's alright, it'll naturally decline/plateau line" is used so that small property investors don't get scared and pull out before the large ones can pump it up enough to profit from bursting it. Why the prevailing Australian wisdom is so pro-housing investment is, I think, more complicated and less mendacious. It's more of a quasi-religious drinking the Kool Aid thing. All the financial investors and Domain journalists and so on genuinely do believe that housing will always go up, or at worst "plateau." And I'm pretty sure they all have skin in the game too, although obviously not as much as the 25-year-old who borrows $400,000 to buy a lovely unit in Dandenong assuming she can flip it in five years, only to discover she'll have to live in it for the rest of her life. I don't know... Is Australia different, not in the exceptionalism way that makes us think we're immune to a crash, but in a way which has led to a society of people suddenly discovering housing investment? Was buying an investment property really a thing for the man on the street before the '90s? (I'm sure it wasn't in Ireland or Spain.) It's like a century of conventional wisdom about the value of owning your own home combined with the speculative greed of the boomer generation, then further mixed with the Australian she'll-be-right attitude. On the other hand nobody saw the US crash coming either so what do I know. And sometimes I get depressed and think maybe we really are seeing the other thing, the unprecedented generational rip-off thing. The UK got hit hard back in 2008 but they've still got massively unaffordable housing even outside the distorting bubble of London.

If you're going to argue that you'd best spill. You can't claim that when everything in the public domain says the opposite. As for blame GNSW not Lee its nonsense, you can't argue shes solely the neutral voice of the people through NSW Greens mechanics but also represents its members. It's easily to blame both - playing political games of binding formalities to keep her at arms reach of criticism is uni level politics games that anyone can see through.
