UPDATE

The Ford van is not in the driveway, it's in the grass on the side of the house. The tires are flat and the van is resting on the ground. I would wager it's 25% rust overall. Broken windshield and no rear seats. I do believe I will not be taking this free car home with me.

Had my first catastrophic oil change yesterday. I do the oil on my 04 mustang and 99 explorer all the time, the oil filter comes off by hand and gets tightened by hand, no problems. I helped my dad out with his 09 grand marquis which has the same engine as the mustang, so I thought hey easy! Oil filter was on there pretty tight from the last time the dealer did the oil, so I needed to use filter tool to get it off. Put the new one on and I tighten it by hand, I even get two hands on and to make sure its tight and its not going anywhere. Turn the engine on and whoops everything dumps out. Turns out hand tight was not ok on this car, so I got the tool on there and it did tighten a few more twists. After we filled it up the engine knocked for about 3 seconds until the oil started getting in there which had me super worried but everything seems ok now.

Luckily because our driveway is lovely and uneven it didn't spill outside of the tarp it just pooled in the middle so we used a sponge to soak it up and dump it out. That was fun.
Did you definitely get the old seal off with the old filter, and did your new filter definitely have one when it went on?

Well I guess I'm doing another oil change! At least 5qt of motorcraft is only $19.

I know the new one had one, but it was garbage day this morning so I can't check the old one.

The garage feedback on the Zoe's service was that I should replace my rear tyres because they're down to 3mm, and the outside edges (like the very outermost run of tread blocks) are very worn.

Tried to explain to them that yes, I know, they were the front ones up to a month ago, which is why they're worn like that. I swapped the wheels front to rear, so they'll see very little wear going forward, and frankly will probably do another year before needing replacement. The front tyres, having been on the rear for 16k, still have 6mm all the way across. Didn't seem to sink in, really, though in fairness the kid on the service desk was really young and only following what he's been told.

(Note for non-UK people: Our tyre limit is 1.6mm across the centre 3/4 of the tyre. I normally replace mine at 2mm if I don't replace them for some other reason earlier)

Any worth of making a roadtrip thread? tldr: planning a road trip and need input on where we should stop.

The wife and I are going to be driving from Seattle to Minneapolis to visit my brother and his wife, as well as go to a family reunion with my mom and grandma at the end of July/early August. Now comes the work of figuring out our path there and back and what we need to stop and see on the way. We know its peak tourist season, so we are going to try to avoid the big names and explore more off the beaten track, which is more our style anyway. The one big thing we have to see is Mt Rushmore, since the wife has never been there. I have been looking at Roadside America(http://www.roadsideamerica.com/) for ideas, any other sites that are worth checking out?

So where should we stop? We have 2+ weeks blocked off to make this trip so we won't be in hurry.

I remember liking Glacier National Park as a kid, but that would have been 1995 or so, it might be way busier these days. At least it's pretty far from the freeway.

Definitely take some other route over the Cascades instead of I-90; I remember US 2 being nice and you can check out Leavenworth on the way through. Grand Coulee is worth seeing and it's never been packed with tourists.

Soap Lake is a weird little town full of Russian immigrants, not a long drive from Grand Coulee. The lake is full of minerals and has always been held to have healing qualities, there may still be spas there. The mineral quantity makes for improved buoyancy, although probably not to Dead Sea levels.

Anybody have opinions on the new civic hatch vs a '17 Mazda 3? I'm gonna buy one or the other, but after test driving both I'm having a hell of a time deciding between them. I'd be getting the top trim in either model so they'd be 99% equal on features and amenities. They're both really fun to drive, so I'm just torn.

Do you think you could live with either? Go test drive both again, preferably longer than last time. If you still can't decide, go with whichever gives you the better deal?

The Mazda looks like a fairly normal modern hatch. The Civic looks like you buy it because you're desperately trying to deny the way your teenage daughter rolls her eyes when you crank up Blink 182.

Which drives better? Have you driven them hard yet?

I like the way it looks, but I realize I'm in the minority on that.

I got about an hour solo time in each, got them up to about 90 on the highway but didn't do anything harder than that. The Mazda was slightly more fun to get there but it's not a huge gap.

My biggest concern with the 3 is that the material on the roof and the hatch is super cheap, which makes me worry that other poo poo in there that I can't immediately get at is also super cheap. My biggest concern with the Honda is that it's going for about 1500 more and it's just the tiniest bit less fun.

I know there have been a few 3 owners on here so I was hoping someone could let me know if there's anything with the platform that I should worry about.

Hmm, I'm not sure freeway/highway/motorway driving tells you that much, other than stability at speed, which should be something of a given in a modern car.

Were I given an hour alone with a prospective purchase, once I'd done the usual assessment of cruising NVH and so on, I'd be hitting some country back roads.

We are both born and raised in Seattle, so we have driven highway 2 many times. Probably going to take I90 just to get out of the areas we know ASAP. Oddly enough, never heard of Soap Lake, even tho I have been to Grand Coulee(and all over eastern Washington) multiple times. Might have to check it out on

Even tho the fuel mileage is probably going to suck, I am excited to take the LS430 on its first roadtrip. I will be putting more miles on it on this trip than I have in the 5 months I have owned the car. Hell its going to be my first roadtrip in a proper couch on wheels, which should be pretty sweet. Last roadtrip we went on was around the north island of New Zealand in a Alfa Romeo wagon, so this one should be a bit more comfortable.

Apart from the aforementioned DBW issue, the stabilty controls and other fun police can kick in and try to actively spit you off the road. I would be very leery about trying to left foot brake any modern car with the fun police switched on.

I finally got a used led tail light shipped from Canada for a reasonable price and installed a curt trailer hitch on my wife's Prius c for an upcoming Florida trip where I want to use a cargo carrier. The hitch install could not have been simpler if I had listened to the instructions and actually supported the inner bumper like they told me to. Instead two hours of micro adjustments alone on my back in the gravel with mosquitos feasting on me. But it is done. (Follow instructions)
