Lol my last job before this was a clusterfuck of them paying me too little, me not giving a poo poo about my work as a result, and then verbally promising poo poo and never delivering. Only job in my life I worked less than a year at.

good questions to ask in telephone interview: 1) how many vacancies there are (important imo) 2) what kind of culture they have i.e what kind of engineer are they looking for 3) if there are any deficiencies/concerns about your application i asked these three today and now i know pretty much exactly the kind of person who is gonna get hired and it's gonna 75% not be me imo but we'll see since the interview went well

a couple of months ago I PMed a yosposter who was offering career help. he said he'd be willing to recommend me for a job at a big tech company, and after thinking about it for a while I decided that moving to SV was something I'd be willing to do. anyway by the time I decided I was okay with moving, he had drifted off, so I decided to just start applying to things on my own. and so after a number of phone interviews and flying out for an in-person, I've got a fancy new job at a big tech company. basically don't assume that you need to know someone in order to find something good. i started all of this by literally going to the big tech company websites and mashing the careers button. this is something that anyone can do

Last job search I did lasted two weeks from start to finish and I ended up applying to over 50 jobs. shotgun approach works even if it's drat tedious.

Mine lasted about 6-7 months with a few breaks and lots of pickiness early on. After asking for advice here wrt resumes and cover letters my response rate went above 80% and I had to turn down a couple offers. To be honest I think migrating to a 1 pager that was built to be skimmed did most of that work. No one was bothering to read my poo poo before tossing my resume. StackOverflow was no doubt the highest quality results, but I had a really bad experience with a local company that had a bait / switch listing (and still does).

Shotgun approach is the best approach, you just need a good resume and excellent cover letter template that you edit only to throw the lovely buzzwords in the job description back at them.
