I mean, there probably is a not minor overlap between these people and the ones who bring in items to the retail store that sold them and demand immediate repairs done by the poor cashier working customer service who they ran into first, because they "don't have time to send it out! You sold it, it's broken, fix it!"

So that is at least consistent.

Trump successfully convincing voters that, "we're going to make health care cheaper AND better for you, simultaneously, through magic or something," makes me question how much voters are really going to respond with, "Yeah, but how are you going to pay for it? I dunno, I'm not really onboard unless I have a good answer for that." They hear, "Better, cheaper health care" hammered home enough, and before long, the lack of details seems to matter less to them.

CNN had a focus group of white women from Pennsylvania discussing the healthcare bill. They all came in saying that they were undecided about the bill.

They all decided that:

- "We need to do something that WORKS!"
- That they admitted that they knew nothing about the bill or Obamacare, but that they didn't like either and had no plans to learn anything about either.

Their logic for not liking either bill, but also admitting that they know nothing about either and don't plan to learn anything about either was that "anyone who has time to know about that stuff shouldn't be making those decisions anyway. You need to get people that aren't involved to do it."

In the end, pretty much all of them decided to oppose the Republican bill, but also said that we should get rid of Obamacare and replace it with something else.

Their ideal healthcare bill was one that was:

So, get to work on that Congress.

Doing some phone banking against the bill last night lent me some weak anecdotal confirmation of this. Pretty much the only time I decided to take a rhetorical that was in defense of the status-quo (stand up for access for millions of Americans, middle class, yadayada), I got someone saying "are you talking about keeping Obamacare? that's a joke." Attacking the Republican bill was way, way more successful.

My other favorite quote from the CNN focus group:

quote:

We need doctors to set the prices instead of the insurance companies or the government.

Not the most eye-rolling part of that entire segment, but the notion that doctors and surgeons are the ones that can determine optimal medical pricing for their work is probably depressingly widespread.

I wonder how many people go around saying, "We need car salesmen to be more active in pricing our vehicles!" or "I wish my realtor got to decide how much I should be paying for my house."

Yes.

They were convinced that the government and insurance companies were jacking up rates and doctors should decide what percentage of each procedure that the patients have to pay.

They just want a magic system that works and does everything, but that no one has to pay for either in premiums or taxes, where things are price controlled, but no one is in charge of doing it, that isn't run by insurance companies or the government

They want something that works, and are just throwing buzzwords at the problem since they can't actually figure out how to address the problems or what causes them, they just know that problems exist

i think the response speaks more to the lack of clarity in healthcare costs, but since we have failed as a nation at not being loving morons and being able to use words it comes out as 'doctor set price plz'
