Hyuga's not flooding too badly, but that's some pretty severe fires. If the American carrier strikes again it's almost certainly over.

What was the point of this? What were they hoping to accomplish? Other than influencing The Empire Strike Back many years later.

Range and radar.

They were production aircraft during the Korean war. Had the first 3 kills of the war too!

It was supposed to be a Very Long Range Escort. One of its significant test flights was a non-stop from New York to Hawaii, and these F-82s were supposed to be able to accompany B-29s from the Solomons or the Philippines all the way to Tokyo, and back.

In the early days of the Cold War, they could also be expected to act as escorts from bombers from London to Moscow, and back, or such similar configurations over the Arctic Circle.

Finally, big planes meant they could carry radar, which was necessary for night-fighting.

Is the idea that one pilot sleeps while the other one flies? Because otherwise, adding a redundant cockpit etc. seems like it's just adding weight which is counterproductive to extending range...

RIOs gotta sit somewhere, and while pilots lobbied hard to have them ride outside the aircraft, eventually a compromise was reached where they'd be relegated to their own bubble, on the other side of the aircraft.

Yes, the Americans have better damage control. Well, technically all the allies do, as per the option(s) available.

There's a realism setting to make them identical, but I can't remember off-hand if they're supposed to be identically good (as the Americans) or identically bad (as the Japanese)

It's also hilarious in War Thunder, where it can get a gunpod that gives it a total of 14 M3 (the kind with an electrically boosted feed that increases ROF) .50 cal guns on the center-line.

But yeah, it was really for recon and long range flight.

For once my escort ships do something!

Here the escorts are unable to protect our shipping.

A ship in harbour takes a hit when the port at Rangoon is bombed.

The enemy carrier is being very annoying and hits our next wave of reinforcements from China – hopefully most were ashore!

I can't really complain about the antics of our opposing carrier force, I've been sinking allied ships left right and centre, but this has been our worst month for shipping losses in nearly a year!

That's a lot of 1,000lb bombs! Thankfully I was right and most troops made it ashore.

That's gotta be a fleet carrier, right? Forty planes finding the target and attacking would probably mean a bunch more used in scouting and another bunch that got lost before reaching the target.

Doesn't necessarily imply its a singular aircraft carrier.

It's certainly not a solo CVE, they just don't have the capacity.

E: a quick wiki check says neither do CVLs. So if it's not a CV then it's at least a pair of lights or three of four escorts. I'd put my money on a CV.

This isn't always captured in Grey's screenshots, but if you pay close attention during the combat replays you can see the squadron designations so it's possible to tell if they're all coming from a single airgroup or not.

It's easier against the Japanese since, for example, the Akagi airgroup is just designated Akagi-1, Akagi-2, etc.

Ahh, we're back!

It seems my subs are a lot more active today!

We lose a plane, but damage a good number of theirs.

We begin to hammer the interlopers at Sinyang.

Apparently when someone criticized my subs, they heard you!

Bugger off!

You little.....

I've been playing with my ASW patrols, and it seems to be paying off!

You guys are lost! Or this is the bravest invasion in history!

For the love of....
I never got hits like this in my game.

Snipers everywhere!

We continue our fight.

Bloody level bombers and their amazing accuracy!

I mean, look at that! Its ridiculous.

The Allied score remains stable while we slowly increase ours – so things are going well still.

Little change here.

The airfield campaign in Rangoon has been responsible for a spike in plane losses this month.

As you can see, my pools are empty of several important types.

Not for the want of trying though!

There has not been much ground combat this month.

Even with the recent spike in losses, I've done pretty well in keeping our ships afloat this time.

Hot Sub on sub action! I think their sub captains have become a little overconfident!

The Surgo fires off half its ordnance. At least five torpedoes are used to get one hit.

Oh no! They have transferred the torpedo curse to us!

Their back! More Kiwi's I assume.

The carriers deal with the landing craft, but take heavier losses than I would have liked.

The subs have suddenly gone crazy!

Curse you! I need those planes!

They manage to hit a ship in the opens seas moving at what I hope is a good rate! Its witchcraft I tell you!

The fighting at Sinyang is going in the right direction now!

Well that was a busy day that took us to most theatres. I have no idea why the subs have suddenly become so active!

Killing a sub is always good.
