it's funny I've had the strong urge to reread majin tantei nougami neuro but not assassination classroom at all really. maybe it's just the space between me having read them.

Nah, I liked the story and characters of Neuro more overall, but the first third or so of the Manga (basically until half-way through the HAL arc) was very rough, with art that would make a "How to Draw Manga" artist blush, very slow/little development until later on, and a premise that, while setting itself up as a detective murder mystery manga, like Detective Conan, it is terrible at. Neuro is misleading. It is a quite terrible Detective manga. It is, however, an excellent character exposition with slow-paced, but realistic, character growth, and some really enticing mystery regarding the overarching plot. It's a very rare case where a Manga kind of started lousy, but got better and better until the end, whereas most Manga tend to peak before the ending, I legitimately feel like Neuro is able to make that touchdown. I might be overselling it a bit, but Neuro definitely has one of my favorite Manga endings, in part because it delivers on it's core themes, which really resonated with me. Neuro is something as fascinating as a reverse shounen manga, where Neuro might be fighting stronger things, but he's not getting stronger, on the contrary, he's getting weaker and weaker with each fight. Edit: and I think Neuro being kind of shaky as a detective manga is almost intended, because part of Neuro's character is that he doesn't understand people and while he can use his demonic tools to solve a case, he has no understanding of why someone would do the things in the first place. I think I read an interview where the author hadn't intended neuro to be a "true" mystery manga. It was supposed to be a battle manga with entertaining puzzles

neuro was not a detective story but the anime tried to be. that's why the anime was terrible.

I didn't really mind the mystery of the week era neuro, it provided the artist with a lot of opportunities to draw weird rear end poo poo (like with every criminal) and there were way less opportunities for that in Assassination Classroom unless they were like depicting the principal. overall it feels like a series with more "bite" & attitude than Classroom (which I still really enjoyed tbf). Neuro's just more fun and more of a jackass than an easily toyified blob man who really really likes porn or w/e

I thought the battle manga portion of neuro was boring

Yah I was a little surprised at the sentiment cuz usually I hear people put it the other way around, that they were disappointed when it turned into this "epic plot" battle manga but tbh I enjoyed both parts bout equally. They're all necessary neuro. Like how Eva starts as monster of the week too.

neuro was about a terrible monster who just wanted to eat, but then he had to deal with all these assholes who wouldn't let him. that this ended up making neuro a battle manga protagonist was purely coincidental from his standpoint.

Man, both Dr. Stone and Promised Neverland are really good and unique (for WSJ that is) and I really hope they succeed and that more series follow in their footsteps. They both find a pretty good balance where they maintain mainstream appeal without being outright cliche. Speaking of Dr. Stone, it seems like Senkuu has his own probable love interest now. I'm a little curious about why she's half-white, particularly given that she's apparently from a family line that has been unstonified for many generations. Having his friends leave to infiltrate Tsubasa's group is also an interesting direction to take things.

Speaking of WSJ, it seems it added two new series. One is a sports series about soccer (by the person who made Straighten Up), and the other one is about kids on social media.

Dexo posted:Man Dr. stone is real good. From what I can tell it seems to be roughly in the middle recently, which I think is good for a newer series? At the very least, I think it's doing well enough to be safe from being cancelled. If I'm interpreting things right, it's nice that it seems to be doing well. The general plot of Dr. Stone is pretty unusual and risky for a WSJ title. It's not really a battle, romantic comedy, or gag manga, which seem to be the main genres in WSJ, and the overall setting and premise don't lend themselves especially well to making video games and toys. Is Dr. Stone the author's first published manga?

Well then, the extra chapter of We Never Learn that dropped today (19.5) is really something. And I'm unsure as to whether that "something" is good.

It's something I'd actually watch even though I'm sure it'll end up being an infinite harem or Fumino will win.

I'm catching up with We Never Learn now (just started chapter 16) and I was totally sure long black hair was going to win, but short-hair glasses got an accidental kiss so maybe she has a chance? I hope so because I like her much more than long black hair. edit: Actually maybe long black hair won't win. So far they seem to be pushing her angle the least, with short-hair glasses and childhood friend getting more attention. She also didn't flip her poo poo when the "Yuiga has a girlfriend" rumor started. edit2: It's funny how long black hair's ~literature skills~ seem to have granted her genre savvy as well. I'm very curious what direction they take their series - I really like that Dr. Stone has cartoonified Senkuu's goal just the right amount. He's not in a survival magna - he's playing loving Civ. And I love that Neverland twists and turns just enough to keep the mystery going, but while still making enough progress.

So I guess Norman is actually dead in Promised Neverland? For a long time I kept expecting there to be some trick involved, but I can't imagine any way that he could have avoided dying in his situation.
