Sure I guess. I can see the psychological dimension of this problem. However, I think it is a bit late in the day to mitigate the consequences of such a policy. Our economic future is with Europe, not the Caribbean, Africa, Canada or Australia. we do not have the kind of export market that most Commonwealth countries would be interested in, and there is no comparative advantage (compared to the Single Market) in negotiating trade deals with them.

it is literally a reason why people voted brexit, though. It showed up repeatedly as a reason why asian-demographic voters voted leave against the standard income and education lines. So,

People frequently seem to take the line that I am some sort of parody- I can assure you that I mean everything that I say with sincerity. Also, I am not sure what you mean by borderline-racist views on the Commonwealth. All I said was that the comparative trade advantage to be had between the Commonwealth and Single Market favours the latter.

Because sometimes when you're in a comparatively good position, you do things that are not best for you because they help others. Like you might buy chocolate that's slightly more expensive but not made by slaves, or take a lower wage to develop things for co-ops instead of corporate raiders. Unless the absolute only thing you're interested in is your own rational self interest, but people like that tend to be bad people.

You don't have to 8e a good person to 8e a hero.
The confusion on Labour's stance on Brexit may come from the fact that, in Remain constituencies and especially in London, leaflets like this were incredibly common:

In the case of Alex Sobel, he actually put his name to the Single Market amendment before abstaining when it came to the vote.

I think the UK is quite capable of negotiating alternative immigration arrangements with other countries post brexit, and will in fact, have to do so to make up the skill gap which will exist as a result of the lack of EU immigration.

I'm not sure what you mean by meltdown. I have no problem accepting that the British Empire was an evil endeavour- you will get no argument from me on that point. All I objected to was the imposition of collective and/or temporally displaced guilt on myself, and other people who share my nationality without recourse to their own individual circumstances. To be honest, I had just reached the end of a very bad and stressful day at work, and probably reacted negatively to what was in all probability a joke of the 'edgier' variety.
