Murray deserves some blame for never putting together a solid defense, but the Pysyk/Kulikov trade only became an issue because of an unfortunate injury to Kulikov. Pysyk isn't exactly good

yes he is, pysyk kicks rear end. he's great in the neutral zone and at defending his blue line, and the panthers give up fewer scoring chances when he is out there. plus he is very cheap. and in fact kulikov is very bad, with or without injury and the badness is enhanced by his turrible contract

Seems pretty drat good to me.

I'd gladly take Pysyk on the Oilers if he were available.

kulikov was making just north of 4 million per year on a 3 year contract. you have to stretch the definition of "turrible" pretty far

paying 4 million for a guy who is giving you worse production than a third pairing guy is pretty turrible.

He's taken 1, 1, and 2 more penalties than he's drawn the past three seasons.

The Penguins are definitely going to sign a cheap veteran to back Murray up and it might as well be Niemi as anyone else, as long as

(a) he's cheap, like no more than 1 year and no more than $1M, and
(b) when Murray gets hurt, which he will, Jarry becomes the starter and the mediocre veteran backup remains a mediocre veteran backup

Pens should totally sign Niemi as a backup. I'm mean, it would only be a problem if he was called upon to play in the playoffs, and what are the odds of the pens needing a backup to play in the playoffs?

You do realize the Pens have another promising young rookie goalie in the AHL right? This is totally another monkey's paw wish waiting to happen.

Come on Hexy, just let Stolarz play goalie

Everyone said Mason's last contract was too much, yet he was surprisingly good enough. Seriously, Steve Mason learning how to play goalie in Philly of all places is still inconceivable

They could be worried about Stolarz groin injury. I watched it happen in person. Really fluke injury, but he couldn't even stand afterwards.

Mason is certainly not without faults but he was unfairly poo poo on for having to play behind an atrocious Jackets defense.
