whatis posted:Murray deserves some blame for never putting together a solid defense, but the Pysyk/Kulikov trade only became an issue because of an unfortunate injury to Kulikov. Pysyk isn't exactly good yes he is, pysyk kicks rear end. he's great in the neutral zone and at defending his blue line, and the panthers give up fewer scoring chances when he is out there. plus he is very cheap. and in fact kulikov is very bad, with or without injury and the badness is enhanced by his turrible contract

kulikov was making just north of 4 million per year on a 3 year contract. you have to stretch the definition of "turrible" pretty far

I'm absolutely fine signing Jagr to a one year deal for triscuit dollars and shoving him on the third line.

Kulikov is at best a mediocre third pair and Pysyk at best is a second pair defenseman.

i'm not an anti-analytics guy at all, but patrick wiercioch's hero charts used to look extremely good and not just when he was being dragged up and down the ice by erik karlsson. but no you're right, there's absolutely no middle-ground between "this guy is good because chart" and "LOL MATH" and i'm totes in the latter category

The Penguins are definitely going to sign a cheap veteran to back Murray up and it might as well be Niemi as anyone else, as long as (a) he's cheap, like no more than 1 year and no more than $1M, and (b) when Murray gets hurt, which he will, Jarry becomes the starter and the mediocre veteran backup remains a mediocre veteran backup

Pens should totally sign Niemi as a backup. I'm mean, it would only be a problem if he was called upon to play in the playoffs, and what are the odds of the pens needing a backup to play in the playoffs?
