Wall is like Rubio, but with swagger instead of being adorable, and he can finish at the rim (but is much worse at the midrange shots they both take too many of). Result is the same TS%, except Wall takes more than twice as many shots a game. We're talking about a point guard with high usage who in 7 years has led 1, just one, above average offensive team. He does dunk a lot for a pg and they're usually really sick dunks so that's a huge plus, but a team spending ~42% of the cap on Wall is never going anywhere. Imagine paying Ricky Rubio 30 million a year and this is the same thing MourningView posted:Look, Colin, if you're gonna do this at least play the hits and get mad about the dancing He seems pretty cool and it's good to dance, very freeing and indicative of a fun loving person IMO. Yeah I'm a John Wall fan but there are like MAYBE 5 players I would give $42.5 million a year to, and John Wall just isn't one of them.

Trade Wiggins for George? Timberwolves would be crazy good. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/next-seasons-nba-heavyweights-warriors-cavs-spurs-rockets-timberwolves/ 538 projects them as a 53 win team with Teague, 58 with Lowry.

Just the opposite "farcical" is a much better word, yeah. I seen red and lashed out, it wasn't the right thing to post. Also going to have to agree that Conley is a touch better than John Wall. Here's the final and decisive ranking of point guard current goodness, relevant to the discussion: 1. Westbrook (always relevant) ... 6. Conley ... 8. Wall ... 10. Rubio ... 12. Teague PG is incredibly deep right now, but do you really max a dude who's not even top 5 at his position?

If you're giving 35% of your cap to one player he needs to be at least a top ten player and ideally a top 5 or so. I get that it's an attempt to spread out stars, but it's going to create an NFL qb situation where every team has one player who has special status and is making triple everyone else's salary. I suppose that's the intention. Every player's salary should have to be approved by me

The Wall contract seems equally a business thing as a basketball thing. The guy is the face of their team and I guess they do pretty well (?) in DC. Plus re-signing always seems like a better idea than free agency outright. I dont even think he's that amazing but I get why a team that consistently make the playoffs would wanna keep their guy.

Conley and Wall seem roughly the same level to me. It is true that he doesn't shoot from the outside especially well but he is extremely good at getting to and finishing at the basket, draws fouls well, plays pretty good defense, and is consistently among the very best players in the league at generating open looks for his teammates. The biggest issue with Washington recently has been that they completely collapse as soon as the leaves the game, which was especially glaring this year in the playoffs. He's really good!

players getting 35% isnt a new thing, it just was only for players after 10 years before, so arguably it was restricted to some of the worst long term contracts because it was superstars who were likely headed toward decline. Superstars are just flat out worth 35% of a cap, and probably more. I guess you can argue what the cut off is of who is a "superstar" or worth that or whatever, but reality is no one is going to win a title without at least one of those guys and thats gonna be what they make unless they're young enough to not be there yet. I feel like people haven't really adjusted to the new higher cap so these numbers seem more astronomical than they are. Same deal on a lot players getting 10-20mil now, everyone insists they're "not worth" that much and obviously in some cases thats true, but really salaries have just gone up quite a bit the last few years and players just make more.

The supermax is going to be absolutely crippling Yeah. A decent (not great) defender whose rep is overblown because he has a perfect body for pg defense, at the least important defensive position, can't shoot, is not an elite pnr player, needs a constant feed of fast breaks. He requires a great rebounder who can defend and throw good and quick outlets, multiple elite shooters, a turnover churning defense, and a better guard defender so he can be put on the weaker guy and not tire out. And once he got all that (except maybe the guard defender) he finally had a good offense. Not great, just good. euphronius posted:Those other five guys aren't available It's a crappy situation to be in, as Sacramento and Indiana and various others are discovering. A bad supermax will cripple your team completely. Wall is not good enough to be a centerpiece for a contender, but now there will be no possibility of major improvement outside of a miracle draft. They're committed to 70 million for Wall and Beal in 2021. They are down for 99 million in 2019, with a cap likely to be increasing only very slowly, BEFORE the extension, and without resigning Otto Porter. Realistically they are locked into their current 49 win roster for ~135-140 million in 2019.
