I don't want to do a big effort post, but people interested in drug policy and the war on drugs should read up on Portugal. They decriminalized all drugs back in 2001 and didn't see any significant increase in use. And they saved a shitton of money on policing, courts, jails, etc. They could instead spend (less) money on prevention and education.

America's 'crack' plague has roots in Nicaragua war
Colombia-San Francisco Bay Area drug pipeline helped finance CIA-backed Contras
Published: Aug. 18, 1996

BY GARY WEBB
Mercury News Staff Writer

FOR THE BETTER PART of a decade, a San Francisco Bay Area drug ring sold tons of cocaine to the Crips and Bloods street gangs of Los Angeles and funneled millions in drug profits to a Latin American guerrilla army run by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, a Mercury News investigation has found.

This drug network opened the first pipeline between Colombia's cocaine cartels and the black neighborhoods of Los Angeles, a city now known as the "crack'' capital of the world. The cocaine that flooded in helped spark a crack explosion in urban America and provided the cash and connections needed for L.A.'s gangs to buy automatic weapons.

It is one of the most bizarre alliances in modern history: the union of a U.S.-backed army attempting to overthrow a revolutionary socialist government and the Uzi-toting "gangstas'' of Compton and South-Central Los Angeles.

Testimony links U.S. to drugs-guns trade
Dealers got their 'own little arsenal'

The army's financiers -- who met with CIA agents both before and during the time they were selling the drugs in L.A. -- delivered cut-rate cocaine to the gangs through a young South-Central crack dealer named Ricky Donnell Ross.

Unaware of his suppliers' military and political connections, "Freeway Rick" -- a dope dealer of mythic proportions in the L.A. drug world -- turned the cocaine powder into crack and wholesaled it to gangs across the country.

The cash Ross paid for the cocaine, court records show, was then used to buy weapons and equipment for a guerrilla army named the Fuerza Democratica Nicaraguense (Nicaraguan Democratic Force) or FDN, the largest of several anti-communist commonly called the Contras.

Webb was found dead in his Carmichael home on December 10, 2004 with two gunshot wounds to the head. His death was ruled suicide by the Sacramento County coroner's office.[68] After a local paper reported that he had died from multiple gunshots, the coroner's office received so many calls asking about Webb's death that Sacramento County Coroner Robert Lyons issued a statement confirming Webb had committed suicide.[69] When asked by local reporters about the possibility of two gunshots being a suicide, Lyons replied: "It's unusual in a suicide case to have two shots, but it has been done in the past, and it is in fact a distinct possibility." News coverage noted that there were widespread rumors on the Internet at the time that Webb had been killed as retribution for his 'Dark Alliance' series, published eight years before, but Webb's ex-wife Susan Bell told reporters that she believed Webb had committed suicide.[69] "The way he was acting it would be hard for me to believe it was anything but suicide," she said. According to Bell, Webb had been unhappy for some time over his inability to get a job at another major newspaper. He had sold his house the week before his death because he was unable to afford the mortgage.

I don't think it's particularly hard to get prescriptions for opiates anyway. You just need to go to a doctor who's loose with the scrips and say you're in pain

Like my Hispanic neighborhood dentist I used to go to. I got a cavity filled and after at the check out desk "Are you in pain? Do you need pain killer prescription?" My friend got a oxycontin prescription and a couple of refills like that

Yeah I guess that's why I'm wondering if straight up legalizing it would create more addicts. Don't they point to over prescribing of painkillers as being a cause of the current epidemic?

A friend of mine died last month from heroin and this epidemic has been on my mind a lot lately. I sure as poo poo don't have any good ideas on what the answers are though. Not even the slightest clue.

Well you start by getting rid of the DEA and treating addictions like an illness rather than a crime.

Rehab instead of prisons, etc. But that requires a good public health system and less corruption soooo

Aren't a lot of the ODs from people getting inconsistent doses because their source is a random guy in a parking lot rather than a rigorously regulated professional laboratory? I thought the whole problem was something like doctors over proscribe, people get addicted, they get their proscription cut because lol you don't need 3 months worth of oxy for a cavity fill. Then they end up getting stuck in the usual black market shenanigans of shady dealers and scam artists.
