The worst take. Sure, people who are aware of the serious misdeeds in America's past are sometimes susceptible to the simplistic idea that the United States is the only bad actor or that any tinpot dictator who brandies about the word socialism is actually a friend, but these people are by no means representative of the broader left.

More importantly, they have their direct counterparts in the alt-right, whose members are busy engaging in auto-erotic asphyxiation as they ram Putin's cock deeper and deeper down their throats. The alt-left at least vaguely have their hearts in the right place, the alt-right are the dregs of humanity.

From what I've observed, the tendency to dismiss Russia, usually using the "but America does it too" meme is pretty strong, at least on left twitter. I don't think I've seen anyone espouse necessarily pro-Russian views, but there is a trend of dismissing the whole Russia interference angle as just an excuse made by the Democratic party establishment for their horrendous loss (which I can see is at least partly true as well). No arguments on the rest.

It's pretty representative. It's not always reflected in outright support for North Korea and blatant things like that. Often it's just a susceptibility to anti-American talking points that go a step or two past reality. It starts in a truthful place, with condemnation of American foreign policy and atrocities committed in Iraq, etc etc. But when you dig into it to learn more about American imperialism and what the US is doing wrong in the world, sooner or later, you're going to stumble into Russian produced propaganda, whether it's labeled as such or not. And most on the left, to some degree or another, have adopted a lot of those talking points that Russia is putting out. So often, it's not a matter of their heart being in the right place. It's a matter of teams. The American team is bad, the Russian team is good. Most liberals promote Russian talking points about why the American team is bad without getting into the Russian team good stuff, but even that has horrible consequences. If Rwanda happened right now, liberals would overwhelmingly claim the US would just make it worse if they tried to do damage control there. The deaths that would follow would partially be on their hands for standing idly by. And as the massacres were happening, they would pat themselves on the back for saving the victims from the evils of intervention. They may not be the dregs of humanity, but they carry water for the people who are.

They are absolutely representative of the broader left. Have you been hiding under a rock for the past 20 years or something? The real left (eg not the slightly less right DNC) has wholeheartedly been embracing the "US imperialism is responsible for all ills in the world" nonsense for decades now.

Oh boy I'm back from Russiatrip. Moscow changes quickly--I kind of miss all the random mini-kiosks literally everywhere. Now they're few and far between, and all the mini souvenir shops that used to hang outside Red Square have been replaced with some sort of purpose-built structures. The metro now has announcements in English, though I'm told this is being done for football stuff rather than as a permanent thing. Walking into the МЦК when you intended to go to the metro is quite confusing, but nice.

What hasn't changed is Russians' abhorrence to making change for any bill larger than a 100RUB. More places take credit cards but I feel weird making credit card purchases for what amounts to $4.

I'm still really curious what's going to happen in a few years when Russia's rampant HIV problem becomes a full-blown AIDS epidemic. I mean, the government has to know it's going to happen sooner or later so what's the plan, are they just going to lean on the church to help paint everyone with AIDS as some closet homo that deserves to die in the gutter?

Yea it's that. Have seen some in Latvia too, but again, I would not expect our pensioners to use them either. As I've said about, I thought I was in a different thread.

Ekaterinburg is 2% HIV positive. Russia is about 0.7% HIV positive officially, with semi-official guesstimates of actual number being closer to 1.5%. Forecasts show 1.3% by 2019 (off the official number).

As for the whole "cash vs bank card" thing. I've had several family members have their bank accounts frozen (or just taken from them), for numerous reasons (government troubles, bank crooks), numerous times.

When you've been in a place where the government has either taken everyone's money, or frozen it, people get paranoid about those plastic cards.

Dunno about Estonia, but here most of the ties with the Church have been cut off after 1918, when Catholicism was regarded as something connected with the Austrian monarchy and as such has to be divorced from state with extreme prejudice.
