Speaking of the weird/poo poo end of FPS nostalgia, did anyone play even the demo for In Pursuit Of Greed..? One of those 'lost to the ages' titles, probably with good reason. http://www.mobygames.com/game/in-pursuit-of-greed

Yep. I played it off of a PC Gamer CD, before Quake was out. I thought it was slow and not fun. Published by Softdisk, hmmm.

This engine was roughly between Wolfenstein and Doom tech-wise. I added many additional features such as transparency, sky box, fixed bugs with sloping floors and ceilings, etc. I also wrote tools for level editing. The graphics were pre-rendered from 3D Studio Max. Shadowcaster is in itself an interesting thing, if not necessarily an FPS.

It isn't out yet, but Mad Sector looks like it's trying to ape the style of the terrible old Wolf3D clones.

I'm a big Half-Life apologist, but I'll happily concede that the gun feel isn't great. Fortunately there's a lot else to like. There's a lot of compelling gameplay in them that doesn't involve shooting.

The standard guns in Half-Life aren't great, but the more exotic ones are pretty fun. Similarly, HL2's pistol and SMG are trash, but I like the shotgun and pulse rifle.

HL2 SMG wasn't bad, it's just a weak starter gun, they even give you infinite ammo for it on the back of the car. A gun's look and feel has to reflect its place in the arsenal after all. The sound is good, the grenade launcher is fun. Gravity gun still somehow feels novel, when you pick up a bed and the mattress slides off it, still not something you see in a lot of games. The worst kind of arsenal you can have in a non-military FPS is all realistic guns with multiple assault rifles and heavy machineguns, and HL2 is still quite far from that, not as diverse as HL, but still fun. Everyone also forgets the antlion pods. I think I've posted already that the fairly understated visually, but for the time well realized, guns make the game feel more mature. First because even the sci fi weapons look realistic, and second because it doesn't feel like the team was obsessed with guns. They're not ultra-detailed clumps of meaningless grey techno crap with blinking lights, or shiny gun porny overly elaborately animated eye sores that take up half the screen.

I wasn't allowed to play shooters for a very long time so I would install demos on my poo poo computer and Corridor 7 was one of them. I have a soft spot for that poo poo game (does anyone have that ad for it talking poo poo about Doom?). Can't wait for ECCorridor7. Edit: found it myself: Convex posted:

Hadn't even heard of it until reading about it here and can tell the £10 gamble has paid off from just my first round. Same here, great game. A bit too much backtracking sometimes and some of the bad scrolls end your run completely, but unlike Ziggurat and a few others I tried the gameplay is really fun. If people weren't recommending it in here I wouldve definitely assumed it was another bad roguelikelike FPS.

I'm going to be honest I'm shocked a modding scene even exists for doom 3. It just didn't seem like the type of game to draw that crowd. Also ShadowCaster. I remember playing the demo (PC Gamer I think?) and thinking man this is awesome. I wouldn't dare load that game up now. Anyone remember the build engine game Legend of the Seven Paladins? I remember the intro level where you pick your character blowing my mind as a kid. I don't think it was officially released outside of Taiwan though. http://www.jonof.id.au/build.games/l7p This is a cool site that seems to cover the game pretty well.

I remember my dad had Shadowcaster and thinking it was super cool. It was developed by Raven but published by Origin/EA, I imagine this is why it hasn't shown up on GOG or something yet.

Doom 3 modding was extremely popular back in the day and had a healthy community until 2007 or so. The core gameplay is pretty good when mappers use it for more than spawning 1 Imp in a narrow corridor like id did.

The Dark Mod is fantastic and the Thief 4 we never got. I hadn't heard about them building an official campaign but that's great news - the main issue with TDM is having to find individual missions and the quality level varying so much from one to the other.

Thief 4 was a pretty cool and underrated game, to me had more interesting level design and whatnot than a lot of other games. I get fans would want a game more like the originals, just to me Thief (2014) was a bit of a gem that did it's own thing, one of the best games that year. One of the best modern FPS adventures of it's kind, I'd put it up with Bioshock Infinite. Also a very well done stealth game, and MGS is my favorite series. Call me crazy. Also a lot better than Deus Ex MD which the team made next, love HR though. Got Immortal Redneck by the way, cool stuff! Also Lawbreakers is not bad, kind of fun random mayhem. Could still use some work in ways though. Heavy Metal fucked around with this message at 16:00 on Jul 4, 2017 |

I remember when Doom 3 modding was obsessed with proving the engine could do more than dark corridors because conventional knowledge was that "it's so terrible it can't do brightly lit areas or sunlight that's why Doom 3 is so dark"

I remember not liking it back in the day but I don't know why. Watched a recent video of it on YouTube and it doesn't look like it's aged well. I don't think I enjoyed any of the total conversion style mods on Q3 now that I think about it. Reminds me of the Firearms mod for HL1 for some reason. Anyone play that game? It had some cool stuff for the time like artillery and parachuting.
