I saw the movies first so I guess I was expecting more of that Yea that's def a big difference in those presentations I feel like I'm in a similar boat these days insomuch as it's mainly just the movies I can get passionate about. Might have just been the Urusei Yatsura anime that did it in for me wrt the Patlabor OVA and especially the tv show insomuch as it tickles many similar Oshii comedy/character beats but better and with more interesting visuals to boot.

I watched the Utena movie. It was good, I loved all the broken down bloody school imagery. It's badass that the birdcage garden decayedinto a bloody pile of crosses. Lots of awesome imagery in it, I'll have to watch it again soon.
