Yeah but in govt they might just leave it because they tend to take a wait and see approach to liberal bullshit involving welfare.

JBP posted:IR sucks because of two things. The ALP softcock out every time they get their hands on the ability to meaningfully change IR and the LNP go loving whole hog once they have achieved a couple of terms and are looking down the barrel of potential defeat. Clearly the answer is to reform political donations. I can't think of a scenario where that wouldn't overwhelmingly benefit the ALP. Other than that it'll benefit the Greens more, but that won't make bogans vote for them.

Also I wouldn't consider it so benign, the ALP are no strangers to the perverted poverty porn bullshit that drives welfare policy in this country. Didn't the Whitlam govt essentially abandon the notion of 100% employment as a goal?

Interestingly VIC ALP seems to be picking up that lib tactic. Mum was saying they're just throwing tonnes and tonnes of cash at their small rural school that barely ever gets funding. Had asbestos inspectors come to look for it, not find any and still get given 170k for construction works for it. Then a further half a million for more construction work.

I mean they should be reformed anyway, but they'd find a way to be just as corrupt whatever the law said.

lmao if you think labor will do poo poo about PaTH, they don't want to be seen as weak on ~*~dole bludgers~*~ because they'll lose the swing voters who are, as a cohort, the stupidest people in australia. without a dramatic realignment of power in labor ala corbyn, things are going to keep getting worse.

Couldn't they do some semi-dodgy poo poo and have the unions strongly suggest their membership donate? Maybe even fully dodgy poo poo like offer a reduction on membership dues if you donate a certain amount.

Ban all political donations. Funding should come from the electoral system itself. hosed if I know what that would look like but it has to be better than allowing the system to be openly corrupted.

Also yes. Companies and unions already run donation drives for political parties.

Yeah I thought about companies doing the same but I figured it's a bit different for an inherently political organisation like a union, whereas employees don't have any uniting principle. But I suppose the rest of Australia probably won't get the difference. Banning donations entirely is definitely better though yeah.

Mr Chips posted:Wouldn't that entrench the status quo and make entry into the system more difficult for new parties? I guess that would entirely depend on how you allocated funding. You'd probably want to include seed funding for new parties and weight funding more heavily to the first <insert low number here> of votes a party gets. It'd be pretty complex and I sure as gently caress wouldn't trust the existing parties to figure it out but it has to be a better option than basically allowing political parties to be bought.

The solution is to abandon the strong party system we have now and to put important questions to the people.
