THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE It was a good book overall, but I think I'm ready to never read a supernatural book that centers around and affluent and anxious, cloistered young white woman becoming slowly unhinged as a metaphor for her evolving sexuality or some such trope again. The horror part wasn't really there for me, but I liked the premise overall. I liked the characters and how they were presented in a weirdly alternating cycle of awful and good, except the doctor who is pretty solidly implacable the whole time, only to reveal that his other half is his wife. As for the ending, that's going to be something I have to chew over a bit. I am not sure if it's the final, inevitable act of the sort of story I described at the beginning of this review, or if it was a final lashing out of the evil of the house itself. I like the ambiguity and I'm not sure I'll ever settle on one clear answer.

WOLF IN THE WHITE VAN You know when I read reviews for this book, I was expecting a Slaughterhouse Five-style jumping through time, of hopping and careening about in a way that would just make sense later, we promise. Maybe I'm just conditioned to this sort of narrative style, but it flowed just fine for me. It jumped back and forth a good deal, but nothing was ever in doubt about what was going on. The book that this reminded me of most powerfully is by far "Hey, Nostradamus", only in reverse - sort of. Take a moment of profound and sudden extreme violence in the life of a young person and mark the years after, and the effects. Explore the psychological toll of trying to find meaning in the act for years and forever coming up short, because the source of it was itself a place of cruel, directionless savagery that doesn't even try to make sense. Conan, or more accurately the narrator's interpretation of Conan, is a very obvious nod to this. I thought the thing that cinched it together for me was about midway through, mentioning how he now knew why his younger self was so conflicted. His reasoning for that sounded for all the world like profound depression, though I will not spoil it here. But it is never said explicitly, pretty much nothing is, which is something I enjoyed about this book. It's an ugly, visceral, straightforward book that doesn't promise answers or a happy ending, but promises to deliver something else instead. That something is told in the story of Trace Italian I am sure, but I will have to read this again before I think I know enough to claim confidence on that.

Whelp, looks like we're going to war, boys. At least it didn't end up being Iran, just Korea Part 2. I hope the GOP won't be stupid enough to push for a draft, as that would probably be the straw to break the camel's back and get us a terror going.

I don't remember anything of the sort with this one, but it was the audiobook version, tho unabriged are you sure it wasn't a history of the list of black women that Jefferson raped until they bore his children?
