Yes, they are backwards, authoritarian, and its a hell hole you should never visit, but they aren't cavemen and they have well organized heavy industry, mining, and oil extraction which all translates into a reasonably competent military; maybe not in comparison to a super power or 1st world socialist state, but definitely in terms of killing a lot of innocent people very efficiently and without a lot of help. most of the "mistranslated" news we get are survivors escaping and sharing the most hosed-up stories imaginable

one time i stood in front of the larouchite booth with their picture of the obama with a hitler mustache on it and started pointing at people and shouting, "You! You look like you have a life to waste, want to join a cult!?" i did this because the larouchites were dicks. i was slightly older than most of the people in my class so i was able to ssee through their bullshit but what they would do is approach random passerby and ask if they had a moment. and if they didnt theyd shout, "oh so i guess you LOVE killing Iraqis" or something like that to trick them into engaging with them the larouchites responded by getting into choir formation and singing: "obama is hitler, hitler is obama he's coming to take our healtchare away." repeatedly. i stood there for like 10 minutes just watching them sing at me and people came up to me to ask what was going on. i didnt have an answer at the time but i looked it up and apparently larouchites are famous in the opera/music journal world for publishing papers on how singing at a certain pitch can control peoples minds, so i guess thats what they were going for.
