Huh, how'd I forget that Bern hadn't been game master yet. She's the logical next choice. People seem to be gliding over what is, to me, the most significant thing: Kinzo is alive. We had red text that he was dead for all games. I take this as the author signaling that a lot of what we've come to expect is out the window, that this story is more detached from the others.

If the red text about Kinzo being dead has expired then so has the red text about how no one could be mistaken for Kinzo. Van Dines rules in general are going to work very badly with Umineko, though. I suggest that this may be at least in part because Leon is generally considered to be a man's name, whereas Lion, not being a real name that most people actually give their children, does not have any particular gender connotations. Lyons might also have been a suitable romanization, considering that Ange's name would seem to be clearly French-derived.

So when twins are born Nanjo, Kumasawa, and Genji know that Kinzo is going to want to see the baby so they can't lie about a stillbirth, but they can still save one of the babies from his clutches by just never telling him that Beatrice had twins.

On the face of it, Kanon's presence would seem to contradict K=S=B=L=CB(Cliff Baby). On the other hand, after one episode pretty much revealed that Kinzo was dead, the very next chapter started with him in full-on Cackle Mode before it all fell apart. This feels like the same kind of misdirection by Ryukishi; it can't be accidental that this encounter with Kanon is one of the first things that happens. I want to collect additional information before suggesting anything definitive, though; right now I don't see how it can work.

How nice it is to have somebody with such an ethos, finally, as our previous detectives were either completely morally bankrupt or... well, incompetent. However, same information or not... wow, is the family dynamic different here, now that we have an heir all decided. Hide, Rudolph and Kyrie all seem to be acting the same as she was, but Eva is completely different, much less of a snide rear end in a top hat- she only interrupted one to clarify a point, and was, well, civil the whole way through. Maybe it's partly because Krauss isn't here, but I can't help but think that Lion's presence is key: in already being the head, everyone can calm the hell down about the succession and be more normal. It's still not perfect, mind... but it's good enough to wonder when the other shoes going to drop.
