It's easy to be good when you're the youngest and fastest. Longevity is clearly a factor in how people reflect on an athlete's legacy though, otherwise it wouldn't have taken Lindros a decade to get into the HOF.
Eventually he is going to get rocked, or something is going to snap or split or crack. The greats are either supernaturally healthy or are capable of adapting their game as they grind down.
Was he the best player last year? Yeah, for sure - but let's at least see him do a repeat performance first, eh?

I mean at least I hope that's the rationale and McDavid got a promise from ownership that they would spend to the cap. So long as that is the case McDavid is offering charity to his teammates, the owners' bill will be the same

To my knowledge, either most or all of it. A massive chunk of it is signing bonuses and I think he's guaranteed to take those regardless if there's a lockout or new CBA, similar to the Weber deal.

Unless it's changed in the current CBA, I think signing bonuses are still 100% guaranteed money.

If my math is right the cap savings on this deal is like 1/4 of a Kris Russell. That isn't going to make or break a Cup run.

The lunacy of a salary cap in general aside absolutely no pro athlete should ever be deluded into thinking that taking a reduced salary for "cap purposes" benefits anyone other than the owner. I'm glad he got most of it up front though, that's smart.

Exactly. It's a fool's gamble to sacrifice your own salary so the team can compete. Maybe your GM will build a rock solid contender like the 2017 Caps, or maybe your GM will mismanage young cost controlled assets and overpay high shooting % like the 2018 Caps.

This teenager who signed a contract that will give him $100,000,000 is an idiot because he could have signed a contract that would give hime $108,000,000. he'll be 28 instead of 25 when the contract is over, s he'll only have 12 more productive hockey years instead of 15.

There's no way he will be able to save for retirement now. What a moron.
