Yeah, I have never heard anything good said about this game at any stage of its development. Everything about the Valkyria series has been completely hosed since apparently the second after the first game went gold (and that includes its DLC I think). I mean, some people say 2 is mechanically competent but holy poo poo I hate everything else about it. 3 was maybe a step in the right direction but I guess had no budget and the difficulty swings like crazy.

The first game's DLC seemed really shat out after how well the base game took some basic concepts and just sort of repeatedly folded them over and over into new takes that made it seem way deeper and more compelling than the original concept would let on, but that's almost literally what the Sakura Wars games were when they were at their height.

By comparison, 2 started with a horrendously stripped-down sense of scale and attention to detail (to say nothing of really letting a basic concept develop over multiple missions), and I think I played about two hours of that fan edit of 3 and completely lost interest. This, though, should never have gotten a pass. The look is wrong, the animation is comically bad given the current competition, and it just feels - in a way that's genuinely baffling - like it was made for a console a couple generations removed. VC1 wasn't the most amazing game visually, but the art style, the way it blended tactical and action mechanics and how those grew over time were really commendable. It really was a skinned Sakura Wars game minus the dating bits, and it worked. I don't get why they messed with the formula not just once, but repeatedly, and with increasingly just flat-out wrong results every time.

I don't even know what SEGA was chasing with this thing, it's insane.

The Overwatch memes and chill thread is really great, because it's fun people talking about the game and posting cute pictures, but no one's allowed to whine or bitch about other players or game balance or any of that poo poo. There are other threads for that. I recommend it.

Carly shook her glass, willing the ice to melt. "You still haven't told me what the mission is."

She leaned forward. "We are going to assassinate the bad men of Hollywood."

The most amazing thing about Overwatch is that the voice actors for many of the characters are huge loving dorks and upload funny stuff to youtube all the time.

The music is written by Yoko Shimomura also known for Parasite Eve and Kingdom Hearts. The soundtrack is very strong and probably the only aspect of the game that never had to redone.

The battle system is ok but the narrative is disjointed, the sidequests are plentiful but they are literally "Go and get this thanks" with maybe two lines of dialogue at most. The game has a lot of travel time in the car

I think you'll find it entertaining on your first playthrough though. The game has cool little details and it's pleasant to look at. The main castcis quite likeable.

Remember to check the rewards of the sidequests from the Quests menu and see if they offer any reward that interests you. Only do monster hunts if you are in need of cash, completing all of them is tedious with little reward. There are also hidden dungeons in the world which are probably the most interesting side content

I liked it a lot. It has great music plus you can literally go to shops and buy the soundtracks to every other FF game including spinoffs like Dissidia and play them in the car (or anywhere if you buy the MP3 player item). I basically had the main theme from FFV playing any time I was in the car for appropriate adventurefeels

Yeah they hit the uncanny valley hard. The game pulls it off a lot better than LA noire did. Still really weird to look at sometimes though.

This is gonna sound dumb, but one of the things that drove me nuts with LA Noire is how they made everyone's hat slightly larger than it should be so their head wouldn't clip through it anywhere. It just didn't look normal at all. You can't unsee it. The bands of people's hats are out by their ears.

I didn't mind the facial stuff at all and though it was great technology.

That doesn't sound dumb at all. The hats looked weird. The tech was really cool. In the end all of the pieces just fell together in this super awkward way. What a weird game.

I still think, at this point at least games need more of an animators touch to not come out creepy looking. Naughty Dog facial animation looks about as good as La Noire or Until Dawn but your brain doesn't immediately get scrambled watching it.

I think this may slightly alter dialogue at most. And one character might try to throw an ineffective punch at some point. Really, no major consequences unless you document everyone's lines.

My favorite weird thing from LA Noire is where they pretend that you work in different departments as you "work your way up the ranks".

You start out in the Traffic division. Traffic detectives solve murders involving, found in, or near cars.

Later, you get promoted up to vice. Vice detectives solve murders involving drugs and pornography.

I forget what the next one is... but every division is homicide. It's just different themed homicides.

It's like they came up with this idea, but then realized that non-murder cases would either be boring as gently caress or too complicated to implement.

edit: Yeah, what you say about Naughty Dog is spot on.

It's the same thing that's always been the case with digital animation: It still requires artistic knowledge of animation.

When John Lasseter made Luxo Jr., it blew everyone's minds. People wanted to know how he did it. Why it looked so good. And while it was a technically achievement, the reason it looked so good is because he applied traditional animation techniques to planning the motion of his animation.

Naughty Dog takes "being cinematic" quite seriously, and it's clear from their results that they employ talented artist, not just modeling and texturing, but animating.

You're telling me that it make sense, when you find an abandoned car full of blood, to have the "Traffic police" investigate it, rather than a Homicide detective, when it's a suspected homicide?

edit: You're right though, I remembered wrong, some of the cases are not homicides.

LA noire was fantastic but i never finished it. Great atmosphere. That reminds me I must go back and finish LA noire. It really wasn't all over the place at all it had quite a clear focus, to solving mysteries which was and still is quite unique. Yeah it had some shooting side missions but you could ignore those if you really wanted. I was actually thinking about it the other day playing assassin's creed which has similar murder mystery missions but not nearly as good as LA noire. What are some other similar recent games?

You should finish it, the ending is uh, well lets say polarising.

There's not really a lot like it, you could try Sherlock Holmes: Crime & Punishment though which has a lot of similar elements and is pretty good too.

So my partner absolutely loves Telltale games, but I'm usually the one playing them for him because his reflexes are pretty terrible when it comes to computer games - he'd be fine if failing QTE sequences still kept the story going, but they don't so...you know.

Does Until Dawn's story keep progressing even if you mess up? I'd really like to try and ease him into playing this stuff by himself, but I don't want to set him up with another frustrating experience.
