It all feels super weird and unsettling because the mom isn't doing anything too weird and yet there is a tension. It's remarkably uncomfortable to read.

I will be very surprised if the protagonist's crush doesn't either get murdered or become subject to a murder attempt if she visits their house.

I think part of what makes it so uncomfortable is that the protagonist still just a kid and doesn't really have any way to avoid his mom. He's stuck with her even if she's crazy.

You guys are talking about Imperial Guards, which IMO was a really good series, kinda wanted more but it was good. It's a lot less...historical than Golden Kamui though, since it's like Not-Japan versus Not-Russia & also Giant Sabretooth Tigers. I believe the same guy who did this does Shut Hell.

I'm liking A Trail of Blood well enough, this mangaka's series can be pretty up & down in quality but they at least usually feel unique and creepy and that's more than most manga.

Speaking of Shuzo Oshimi, I heard that Iniside Mari apparently ends up with Mari having multiple personalities or something? I read some of it and didn't reach that point, but if so that's disappointing. One of my least favorite tropes is when that particular type of MPD/DID (which, as frequently portrayed, is controversial at best scientifically) is portrayed like a real thing. I would rather there just be a flat-out supernatural explanation.

How is Aku no Hana? Does it suffer from an unsatisfying ending?

Inside Mari finale spoilers: Yeah that is more or less correct. Pressure from her family, expectations put on her, and from suppressed attraction to her female classmate just crush her down. She notices the male 'protagonist' buying porn one day and begins to obsess over having his comparatively simple life until it turns into full-on DID. It ends when the inconsistencies mount up and when she finally gets her hands on a diary the male protagonist wrote about his time in the city (which obviously don't match with her memories of being him).

So I read Aku no Hana. I actually liked the ending. It's not that common that teenagers in manga actually grow up and meet new people and change. I would have liked to have known more about what ended up happening to Nakamura, though, since all that's really revealed is "she worked at her mom's shop and I guess maybe became well adjusted?" It's also not really clear how Saeki resolved her issues; when he meets her again in high school she clearly still seems "off" and gets weird with him over the topic of Nakamura (and she's also dating a guy who looks like the protagonist, which kinda indicates she never really got over him). I guess you can just attribute it to teenager hormone weirdness. The conclusion for the main character was good, though; I liked his general character development.

Agreed, a lot of people get down on Aku no Hana but IMO it's his best series. That may not be saying much to some people, but I liked it and feel like it concluded better than any of his other series.

Aku no Hana was real hosed up but I think pulled off its hosed-uppedness a lot better and with consequences than most series that simply try to be edgy for the sake of it.

I've been continuing where I left off in I'm Inside Mari, and while I don't really like the whole multiple personality thing, I have to give it credit for being foreshadowed really well. There are a lot of hints given early on that this guy isn't really inside of Mari's body. The real Komori Isao's reaction to Mari and the other girl breaking into his apartment and saying "I'm you and stuck in this girl's body!" is hilarious. Poor guy is so confused and really doesn't want to deal with this poo poo.

Oh yeah Ravages of Time and Souten Kouro (the latter got loving dropped by scanlator though which pissed me off cause it was my favorite rotk manga)

I checked out what's been scanslated of Souten Kouro cause I love Ravages of Time and wow, it's pretty good. Really liked the portrayal of Cao Cao and Liu Bei (Sun Jians kinda boring but he's dead so whatever). Cao Cao's actions and speech seem outrageous/cartoonishly outlandish but it fits when I think about the original Three Kingdoms novel - a person able to accomplish all of those feats must definitely have been an extraordinary/eccentric person.

Also enjoyed the depiction of Liu Bei as a fast talker/swindler con-man which was quite refreshing. He's similar to the Ravages of Time Liu Bei in that they are both highly skilled at manipulating people but the Souten Kouro one is less "noble" I suppose.

Only 74/400 chapters were translated so I'm pissed off too. Thanks for introducing me to it though!

Bokko is an amazing war manga about tactician monks that go alone to cities under siege to help the citizens organize against invaders. It has everything you could possibly want about a war manga in a siege situation with very low odds of survival.

Is that the manga with the sabertooth tigers and nippon nationalism

Nah. If for whatever reason Japanese nationalism really gets on your nerves, Golden Kamuy actually takes a pretty critical look at Japan during the Russo-Japanese war not only toward it being kind of an awful war that never should've happened to start with, but also in how poorly the country actually treated its own soldiers during and after the war.

Golden Kamuy is extremely good.

The mean teacher is a bad person, but she was actually more or less correct when she talked to Shiori a couple chapters ago. For all her character flaws, she (the band teacher) is apparently very competent and hard working, and you don't get good at music by just having fun all the time.

I hope soccer teacher is actually a good guy. I don't really see any reason for him to be tricking Shiori, and band teacher's negative reaction to them talking with one another implies he's being genuine.

One thing that always confused me is why ex-baseball drum guy was ostracized after joining the band. In what world does an otherwise normal/good looking guy joining a rock band in high school make him unpopular?

I'd guess because the baseball team is a Big Deal at the school and he just "betrayed" his teammates and the school in general by prioritizing his own interests over those of the group. Time spent on music is time not spent prepping for Koushien.

There's a lot of things to complain about in Genshiken but this is by far the most nonsensical one i've heard.

In other news, looks like someone has never seen a Ghibli movie before and doesn't feel like getting pressured/shamed into watching one, but those are some pretty low blows:
