That's what I was getting at. It's still better than the Eagle at what the Eagle does, but not 30 years of pure thrust/weight/lift improvements better; they spent some of that money elsewhere, while still getting some significant improvement.

AFCENT sent one of our jets home about 20% through it's planned deployment because it was such a piece of poo poo.

Which is why the wing sent it downrange in the first place.

It cost someone an NTSB internship for confirming those names when the first news station called to confirm details, but I say it was worth it. "Hey, that's an odd date for an internship to end." "Funny story..."

I'd want that person on the team, they'd help keep things light. Just, y'know, don't let them communicate outside the organization.

Pretty much everything open source on the Internet says the F-22 can climb like a goddamned monster in a standard configuration, though no one wants to put out hard numbers for very obvious reasons.

I've seen a couple of F22's that didn't even get an actual unrestricted climb hit FL430 in a really impressive distance from their point of departure. I don't think they ever had to actually stop their climb but they probably slowed down at least twice on the climb before getting their next clearance for higher.

So barring the end of the world happening next week, I'll be doing a two day trip to the USAF Museum in Dayton. If you're going two days, you might spend the first trying to cram a quick overview of everything in and the next day focusing on details. I still haven't read most of the stuff on the walls after four trips there.

The cafeteria Valkyrie Cafe isn't very good. There's some better local restaurants close-ish (they're on the other side of the grounds, which of course is gigantic).

Edit: the guides are all volunteers and most of them know a ton of stuff. If it's a dead day you can easily pump those guys for a lot of info. The actual guided tour takes like 4 hours.

Something like half to two-thirds of the Superhornet fleet is grounded because of being unable to perform critical maintenance since Congress can't pass an actual budget.

Yeah, I plan on getting into the area around noon (I'm driving there from DC and leaving *early*), and spending a few hours there until they close, then hitting it up when they open Friday morning, then if I still feel I haven't seen enough, getting a visit in before hitting the road to come back Saturday afternoon. I figure so long as I'm out of the area by 5pm for a seven hour drive, I'll still have functional daylight until ~9pm for the most unfamiliar roads I'll be driving back on.

Isn't the F-22 also a really good ground attack aircraft?

That's.... a bit of a stretch. Do you want a fast, stealthy airplane to penetrate hostile airspace and hit a target or two? F-22 likely surpasses the F-15. Do you want a plane on station for a long time dropping multiple bombs in support of ground troops without really having to worry about SAMs or enemy air power? F-15E, please.

Yeah, the F-22 can do limited first day doorkicking precision strikes, but it's not a strike aircraft by any means, especially since it's restricted to first-gen GBU-39s (pretty sure it can't fit and/or isn't able to drop SDB-IIs) and 2-4 JDAMs without having to go with external stores. If they'd gone through with the full buy order and then funded the FB-22, then that's another story.

I don't know what attendance is like on a summer weekday, but on a school day the place is nearly empty; it's awesome.

DC to Dayton is almost certainly going to take you closer to 8 hours than 7. I've done DC>Columbus and back a couple of times and even at ~80mph most of the way and only a single stop it still took ~7 hrs. Dayton is at least another hour further west, maybe longer since you have to deal with Cincy.

Any fears I had about AA Business compared to BA Club World were very unfounded. The seats aren't quite as comfy but there's actually in-flight wifi across the Atlantic (which BA still can't seem to offer), and they have ice cream sundaes (and I just had one even though I'm lactose intolerant).

The wood paneling in the cabin looks pretty dated on this A330 though.
