There's a good argument that trying to de-politicize history is a political statement but then you'd have to be a humourless nerd (like me) who can't just enjoy some dude exploring colonial era cooking and teaching people about it.

They thought NPR tweeting the Declaration of Independence was a call to commit treason. Turns out when everyone you trust tells you the media is trying to destroy the president, you'll find ways to make that true.

all of the things bomber guy said in his video, were actually said 1000000 times before him, so he is being a huge dumbass. by play conditioning does he mean...the game teaching you as you play it. because every hack game reviewer talks about that almost immediately so he's loving off his rocker its also the most boring and obvious thing you can discuss, buyt makes people feel like geniuses for some reason so when you push right on the controller...your character moves...right. the game is TEACHING you that you can use the controller to move maybe he means something else but i'm assuming not because people only ever talk about three things when they talk about souls in the 800 videos they make over the span of seven years
|
# ? Jul 7, 2017 19:35 |
|
It's a bit more in depth than that, it's about conditioning more complex behaviour, specifically the differences between bloodborne and souls games with the latter's focus on shields. Bloodborne has a number of mechanics that give you a very different view coming into it than a souls game does.

I was mostly kidding, and I think Hbomb was mostly kidding about how unique his "play conditioning" revelation was too. I mean the copycat video is almost completely his point-for-point, it's not about the guy copying his grand "play conditioning" thesis.

most people don't point it out is the thing, most people go oh the souls games are so hard!! and miss that the reason they're so good is they're a masterclass in video game design. even the people aping the series (the clowns behind the surge and lords of the fallen) completely miss why the games are so good since they only understand them on a surface level. very few game critics seem to actually understand the games beyond "this was too hard for me" as well.GulagDolls posted:slowly I will morph this thread into dark souls thread # 87 i accept this inevitability. Bloodborne is the first relatively new game I've played in a long time. I picked it up on some recommendation, and this was my exact reaction at first. The game really has a large learning curve to it, but it's good when you get that. It doesn't hold your hand at all, and people are so used to that.

I feel odd in that I never really found souls games hard, not in the way I find, say, twitch shooters hard. They're more like puzzles in motion, a problem that can be solved by applying your brain rather than, well, getting gud, and you generally figure them out more the more you play them, whereas I don't get any better at shooting mans when I play shooters.

Some bosses can be viscerally, pants-shittingly hard like Orphan of Kos or Manus, where no deal of calm-headedness will really help you and you just have to be good at the game to kill them. I agree that most of the series is a pretty straightforward problem to solve, but there's a couple exceptions. Contrary to a lot of hbomb's points though, I do feel like sword and board is not only a viable way to tackle most of the base game in Souls, but maybe the most viable way. Turtling isn't how you use a shield in Souls, you pull it up at the last second to keep your stamina regen up and alternate between one and two-handed stances
|
# ? Jul 7, 2017 20:22 |

or you could just roll and attack when you have an opening while always 2handing as i did to beat all of them.
|
# ? Jul 7, 2017 20:24 |

You do - you just keep your shield ready for when there isn't an opening but there's an axe flying at your head Or dodge too i guess but maybe you care about your positioning at the moment more than you care about stamina loss.

I'd agree, it's how I play it, but I think a lot of people end up very overly reliant on it and do just hide behind it and play very conservatively which can make the game very tedious.

I mean if you aren't intimidated by some of the shields in dark souls there might be some kind of threat assessment malfunction in your brain. Drakekeeper shield is very intimidating.
