Sten Freak posted:We had revenge of the nerds on VHS , recorded from hbo. My mom had never seen it straight through and thought it had a good message about the nerds winning. We'd pause it whenever a nude scene was coming up if she was walking through the room and watched it probably 50 times. My family used to go to the drive-in a lot when I was a kid, and I remember seeing a double feature of Revenge of the Nerds and Bachelor Party shortly after my seventh birthday. My mom was not amused by either one. She somehow managed to sit through Revenge of the Nerds, but demanded we leave pretty early into Bachelor Party. 80's comedies are chock full of stuff too tasteless and offensive to be allowed today, but I'm glad my parents let me watch 'em!

Movies like Revenge of the Nerds and Bachelor Party are actually pretty highbrow as far as 80s raunchy comedies go. There was a whole genre of b-movies like Porky's, Screwballs, Joysticks, etc... which were basically tailor made for late night HBO basement viewing.

Is Meatballs still good? I haven't seen that one in probably 15 years. Oh yeah, and this may not be a popular opinion, but I thought Animal House was kinda dumb. I'd be willing to grant that most of the movie was alright, but the ending was ridiculous. Like you think that they're gonna come up with some wacky plan to pass college and pull one over on the dean, but instead they just... incite a violent riot. Like it almost borders on domestic terrorism by today's standards. It's not even that it was offensive to me, just kinda felt like a lazy and boring ending. I'd rather watch Race for your Life, Charlie Brown.

Thank you for reminding me of the Jerky Boys movie. That one definitely was a product of its time and belongs in this thread. I also agree with the Mallrats nomination, since I absolutely adored that film when it came out and cannot stand it now.

striking that off of my list of possible future usernames. The Great Mouse Detective I mean it's not BAD, but it's not as good as I remembered it. The clock tower scene is still awesome though.

Clerks is definitely a product of its time but the acting is bad, with the exception of Randal and Dante. Everyone else is reciting their lines like it's a high school senior play.

I grew up not too far from where Kevin Smith shot Clerks, and visited the place a few times. Trust me, he got the better actors in the area.

When I really think about it, it's the two female characters that aren't that good, I feel like everyone else does a half decent job. the first girl is good in the scene at the end when she chews out Dante though. I think it was in one of his specials Kevin Smith said when it was originally written he was supposed to be Dante, but he hated watching himself act and so he became Silent Bob. I used to like Kevin Smith a lot. I still kinda like Mallrats I guess I'm in the minority there. It's just got a nice feels. His special "stand up" things are probably still pretty funny too. He's just become kind of a fat, arrogant, smelly rear end in a top hat now. Comic Book men is the prime example of this. Jesus whenever he's talking to the guys he's elevated like, a foot more than everyone else so they can hear the word of Kevin Smith handed down from on high.

His specials where he just gets up and talks and answers questions for an hour or two are still really solid. Kevin Smith is a pretty incredible storyteller and that shines in some of his work, but then there's the poo poo like Yoga Hosers that makes me question everything about his judgment

Speaking of raunchy comedies which don't hold up, add American Pie to the list. Everyone between the ages of 15 and 30 loved it when it came out since it had been years since someone made an old-fashioned R-rated teen sex romp, but watching it now I feel less amused and more fremdschämen at the dialog and gags. It doesn't help when you see all of the people who ended up in dead-end careers because of it either. Seann William Scott never escaped being "the rear end in a top hat", Jason Biggs will forever be "the pie fucker", Tara Reid became a total train wreck, etc... The guy who played Shitbreak is the only one who seems to have a stable career on some CBS autopsy-porn drama for old people.

He's been in every single one of the direct to DVD sequels.

Man I'm afraid to rewatch American Pie for that reason. I thought it was hilarious at the time. Biggs did get a role in Orange is the new Black. I only saw first season or so, not sure if he does much since then. Eugene Levy's career as I recall was mostly mockumentaries or nonexistent at the point of the first Pie movie. You're right but it's tough to blame the guy for getting a paycheck.
