Turns out that awkward "hey look at me I'm on fire" semi-casual stagger that you see in action films and always seems rather 'filmy' is actually horrifyingly accurate. gently caress me. I didn't know anything about that catastrophe until you brought it up, thank Christ they didn't have the stand penned. It would have made Grenfell look like Guy Fawke's Night.

Before TSA chat goes too far away, My wife travelled to Canada. She wanted to take her Surface with her, and needed a charger (she wouldn't be near power for days). Turns out 3S lipos can directly charge a surface, so I made a pack and sent it with her. I followed all the rules, but TSA was not amused (although they did let it through).

I guess it's good that the various numbers of hybrid cars aren't self-detonating like these things. Yet.

There was this story someone told on a podcast when they had to travel to Japan frequently for business and someone discovered the airsoft business in Japan is huge. They bought a ton of models for cheap and we're bringing them back. They went through security and the employees started to go through then to make sure they all marked as fake guns or some weird rule. The owner was standing to the side and he said the look of all the people standing in line where security was pulling out these fake guns that made to look like real assault rifles and was comical and horrifying when they saw security putting them back into the bag after nodding. As another story somewhat related: in the miniature war gaming market people started reporting models that can cost upwards to 60 dollars without painting showing up after travel ruined because security needed to look inside them. Some simply snapped in half. What some people who professionally paint models (which is harder than one would think) or people trying to protect their investment started doing is get a hard case built for handguns, put a BB guns inside the case along with whatever they don't want to be hosed with and declare the bag as having a firearm. These go though a different process where opening the bag is more careful and not as done as frequently since a lost gun is something the tsa does not want to see.

The new exhibit at the national building museum in Washington D.C. is pretty thread worthy. https://www.washingtonian.com/2017/07/07/the-national-building-museums-hot-new-installation-wasnt-finished-for-opening-day-heres-why/ At one point they talk about having ladders strapped to scissor lifts to reach high enough.

Platystemon posted:My hot take: batteries won’t be substantially more energy‐dense than they are now. Yeah, they're about at the physical limit of what you can pack into a chemically based system. Higher energy density will require a new/different technology. Like maybe using a liquid which could be combined with a component of the air to produce useful energy.

One of the many fun things about boom lifts is they're not designed to handle the forces involved in arresting a fall, so if you tumble out while tied off there's a pretty decent chance the thing will tip and kill your rear end anyway. Levers are a bitch.

Most notably, the behavior that occurs on a person when they're severely burned. The victim on fire is clearly in a state of shock, which explains why he's just shuffling along. As for WHY it remained on fire, I can't even begin to speculate that one. Perhaps it's material related? I know polyester burns and melts in a very distinctive manner.
