Doc Block posted:didn't a court recently rule that biometric data used for access control or in place of passwords etc is protected by the 5th amendment now? kinda the case was about the government knowing that child porn had been downloaded at a particular location, and wanting to seize all phones and force touch ID unlocks from everybody at that location. the court saying the 5th applied here was kind of limited in the sense that the government seemed to not know which device belonged to who, and that unlocking the phone with the fingerprint would implicitly serve as testifying that "this is my phone, and I control its contents". that wouldn't be the case if the police knew that the phone was yours, and what they were looking for, and the decision specifically says that the fifth might not apply in that situation. (and, of course, this is just a district court, so this isn't a decision that has wide-ranging applicability)

Comfy Fleece Sweater posted:can courts compel you to open a safe ? yes, but they need to demonstrate that there is likely something relevant in the safe, that you had access to the safe, and the scope should be limited to directly relevant documents to prohibit fishing expeditions. so if the police have a witness who says they saw you put documents into the safe when they came into your office right after you had a meeting with the other suspect in your fraud scheme... the court will probably agree to force you to open that safe and turn over any documents related to that meeting. note that the extent to which the above applies depends on you being able to afford a good attorney. He knew exactly what kind of timber he wanted, but not just "I like oak" or "I like maple." He knew it had to be quarter-cut. It had to be cut in the winter, ideally in January, to have the least amount of sap and sugar content.
