Yeah that really looks clean as hell. Unless the motor is about to imminently poo poo itself, it's probably a good deal. Even better if you can haggle even more.

blk posted:Are PPIs a good idea on Boxsters? Good idea on any car. That said I've pushed my luck and got lucky with just as thorough of an inspection that I can conduct and a nice long test drive, a quick deal can be a good haggling technique. I've also bought cars at salvage auctions in the past and your "inspection" consists of you having a few hour window to look over the car without it's keys with everyone else walking around, or better yet having a set of photos to go off of and the assurance that it was probably working well enough to crash. With this next boxster I'm in the process of buying at least I've bought a durametric pro so I can prod the ecu and it can tattle if it's been really abused.

Yea I don't understand how it has such low mileage for a 2005 car. I think it is babied a bit too much. I already put 1500 miles on mine since picking it up last week and I haven't even gone to any of the long trips I have planned yet.

I saw a 951 at that price, did the PPI, and sat there for 10 min as the inspector chewed out the seller for the condition of the car and the hacked mods done to it.

Anyone have experience winter-driving a 996? I want to get something I can count on in virtually all conditions but realistically will probably be driven in actual snow maybe 2-3 times a year. I've seen some C4S's in my area that are somewhat affordable and I like the idea of whipping around a 911 in inclement weather. Mostly because I drive my 964 less and less and still want the "911 experience" 12 months a year if I can manage. From what I've seen, the AWD system isn't that great for slippery conditions, and the 997 version is pretty much universally better, but those cars are still a tad too expensive for my taste. Besides that there's the whole thing of getting dedicated wheels and tires, which I don't mind doing, but at that point maybe a RWD Carrera would be fine. I just don't trust it though since there's some gnarly hills in my area and I just KNOW the day will come where there's a light dusting and not having AWD will keep me from going up the hill.

The 996 AWD will help keep you from getting stuck but won't keep you from sliding off the road though other than that it'll be as fine as a RWD sports car can be in winter conditions.

Pretty rare, curious how much it'll go for: http://bringatrailer.com/listing/2011-porsche-boxster-spyder-4/ The other thing I've learned about Porsche pricing is that people are selling their used GT4s at or over what they paid to dealers. One guy in the comments said his dealer offered to pay 5k over to take it back.

Ducktail! I've had it back a couple weeks but didn't have any photos until just recently, but I changed out the original whale tail I had for a ducktail on the 911. I think it looks killer, and I'm mostly happy with the paint considering the age and condition of the mostly original paint around the tail. I'll do a whole car respray later but for now it looks good enough. I liked the original tail and I still have it, but ultimately I think it looks a lot cleaner and neater, which I'm big on. This one only has 50% the lift reduction as the whale tail but being the fastest guy through the corners is not the most important thing in the world. http://imgur.com/ChJrlPj http://imgur.com/ZxyhihI

Is it OEM? Reproduction? I dunno how the parts scene works for Porsches.

It's a reproduction in fiberglass, took some building and shaping to fit right but the final product is pretty good. I'm not sure if factory originals are available anymore, but there are some shops that will take original metal decklids and bond fiberglass ducktails to them to match the OEM fit perfectly. Just checked through rennlist, an original RS ducktail might be $5k+ now (I'll stick with the fiberglass!) and no more are being built.

So, I think I'm going for it. Got to break in my new durametric pro with this one. Can I get a sanity check? Plan is to give final payment on Thursday so I can back out before then for the cost of my deposit and alternative travel arrangements home. 05 Boxster base, nicely equipped, 92k km Good: Low to average km for its age Body looks great, very minor scratch on passenger side, should be nearly invisible after a polish Drives great, no abnormal noises when driving, going over bumps, accelerating hard, or braking Color looks fantastic in person, the yellow isn't grating, sand beige looks really nice Tires have good tread Everything electrical works, and so does AC Shouldn't require anything to pass a safety inspection in Manitoba Canadian market car Meh: One of the POs installed aftermarket radio and amplifier. All red taillights are not my thing, but are passable. Tires are dated 2013, so a little old but the tread looks good, no cracking in the sidewall which is a surprise for Michelin's Black floor mats, and tacky pedal covers Convertible elastics are worn, they're easy to reinforce though so I'll have to do that Cheap cf wrap on some interior bits Missing factory tool kit Bad: Missing wind deflector Seat adjustment knobs (upper back rest ones)- one missing, others suspect, will need replacing most likely Aftermarket spoiler, install looks ghetto. Would try to replace with factory one if I can track one down LED lighting installed in few places, computer is unhappy about it when probed with durametric, no warnings on cluster though. LED in gauge cluster, uneven lighting, bugs the poo poo out of me No service records with the car Only has a single key, would need to purchase another. Scary: Had 13/19 revolutions in 4 and 3 rev range at 350ish engine hours, assumed to be from single event. 150 revolutions in range 2 at 2900ish engine hours, and last revs into range 1 were at the same time Currently at 3300 engine hours. After the drive could hear some valve train noise from motor when kneeling behind it. Inaudible from inside car. Sounded very similar to what my previous one did after winter storage. After a few minutes noise went away. Crossing my fingers it's just from being stored for the last month, and maybe being due for an oil change. The range 3,4 overrev scares me but it was almost 2900 engine hours ago so if excessive damage was done I'd expect it to have surfaced by now. Overall I'm scare-roused. So far we agreed on $16,000 CAD and at that price I should be able to get away with breaking even even if the motor betrays me and needs replacing. I'm thinking it's worth around $24k-26k in Manitoba based on what I've seen them listed for and having sold my previous one for $21k with almost twice the mileage.

Hmm I can definitely see why you're on the fence... at break even if motor grenades and assurances of that much profit, kinda a hard deal to pass up. On the other hand, and I'm sure you're weighing this too, car absolutely screams of PO fuckery: fairly tasteless mods, which jives right with the overrevs, also electrical issues? No service history bugs me but is unsurprising given the state of the car and may not be too risky given the low miles, just praying they did a handful of oil changes. Agreed damage from overrevs would have presented itself by now, and I believe in your ability to fix what can be fixed. EDIT: Any idea how much a new key would cost? Wowza, key looks to be $400-$500 all in, I think the durametric would let me marry a new key to the car, but I'm not sure how involved that is, or how restricted (can I use any old used 987 key?) Unfucking the thing doesn't seem like an insurmountable task, I just don't know if I want to commit (I really want it, but my gut is telling me I'm in for a good amount of work) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdnnJRCRtPo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0w_spcWArI The more I rewatch those the more I think this needs a new motor soon. Maybe it's in dire need of an oil change, maybe it's the IMS on its way out, maybe the valve lash is out of spec, maybe an accessory has a dying bearing. Can't decide if I cut my losses or go balls deep and see how far the rabbit hole goes. Oh, there is a weeping seal in the area between trans and motor, it's wet but no oil spot on the ground anywhere. Makes me un easy about the ims even more.

I really don't hear anything odd coming from that motor. What's the scary sound because it's not really coming through audio for me. Oh, and an IMS would sound nothing like that. Think rattling chains in a metal bucket, and only heard for a few seconds before explosion. Ether Frenzy posted:That is a sweet car either way. Do you have any with Duck vs Whale in a similar angle? Well, it's a metallic rattling noise while off throttle on the way down which had me the most worried, and the loudish rhythmic metallic ticking at idle. The ticking sounded similar to what my previous one did after winter storage that cleared up after two days of driving so I'm not crazy worried on that, the rattling on the way down had me worried as that I haven't heard. Still working on my expectations for engine noise from these. Either noise on my old forester wouldn't have even been worth noticing, but with an unknown car and a 24hr drive ahead of me I'm probably being over sensitive. With the PPI I'll at least get another opinion of the car and some feedback as to my own assessment for it.

That rattling actually sounded like subdued afterfire out of the exhaust to me. The PPI should figure it out.

Owner is wafting and using lack of time as excuse. I've offered to help with dropping it off at the shop and they offer after hours drop off, and it's not been driving so it's not like he needs it as a daily. Without the PPI I won't buy this one so I guess potential bullet dodged and it'll be somebody else's mess to clean up. Oh well. Time to start dredging Kijiji for another opportunity! Funny enough, the car is *technically* mine as the PO had sent me a fully filled out bill of sale and a copy of the registration signing that I've already paid him in full.
