   My ASW patrols do something!   Bring me my brown pants! Both task forces run away from each other.  Our bombers make useless raids against the strong and stable destroyers.  The Fijians put up a good fight before surrendering.   The Liberators get their daily kill.  Our destroyers can protect themselves at least!   We continue to crush the Chinese at Sinyang.   I wonder if I did for another sub? I've been very disappointed by the Kiddo Butai's performance.

  The Allies continue to unload fresh victims at Luganville. By my count over the five or so numerous landings like this they lose over 500 men. They then re-embark and flee.  We lose Kate's going after the destroyers again.  Curses!  God dammit! Where are your escorts?  The ground losses continue here. I wish I could do something about them!  We also see some fighter combat.   Their carrier has slipped past us! They hit Rabaul and three bombs find the Yamato!  They also hit one of our supply convoys.  Their afternoon attack focuses on this convoy and is just murder.  I feel annoyed that the carriers slipped past me. I may have to try another attack run with my battleships! I think I'm dealing with one fleet carrier or multiple CVE's, but nothing to heavy. At least I've done a number on their planes, 20 kills is a nice amount.  Heavy losses today.  On the plus side, the Yamato shrugged of 3,000lb's of bombs today!

Was there a real life case of a major task force bumping into a random freighter? I can't recall one, but maybe it would have gone unreported. Certainly happens all the time in game.

  A good sized tanker start to the day.  A depth charge slams into the Surgoing down.  The enemy at Sinyang is collapsing fast. We then get reports that they have been surrounded. The time for their total destruction has come.  It looks like the carrier has slunk off for now. The Kiddo Butai steams back north to try and intercept. I'm having to make a guess at its location though – back to Pearl or down to Australia. I'm making a bet on Pearl, but they have a day's head start on me...  Two wounded ships go down.

The USS Pope I can find was sunk at the Second Battle of the Java Sea, where it ran into escort elements of the invasion forces while itself escorting HMS Exeter. It eventually got sunk by dive bombers off Ryujo, which was not part of the Kido Butai. As far as I'm aware the Kido Butai wasn't even present in that theater at the time. Also known as the battle where two IJN destroyers chose to place themselves at significant risk of potential attack in rescuing 442 survivors from Pope, Exeter and Encounter (Exeter's other escort). Especially since the sheer number taken on board significantly impeded their fighting capabilities.

  We miss a landing ship. Boo!  Dammit! I was just thinking of moving her!  There's our carrier, she went south again!  Guess what's happening again.  The Chinese lose a massive number of squads.  We then inflict another bout of heavy losses on them further north.  Hunt the carrier, hunt the carrier. I also have something good going on in China.  A 70,000 man force is now less than forty miles from a major city.  It seems to be an interesting time to be a sub out there....

6 July 1943 The Battle of Kula Gulf: Following a bombardment mission, a group of three American light cruisers and four destroyers intercepted a Tokyo Express run of ten destroyers (seven operating as transports). Taking Chengtu would be a pretty massive victory as it's one of two bases in China where destroyed units can respawn. If you do manage to take it, Grey, are you going to go after the Chinese Communists next? They shouldn't be that hard to take down considering how long they've been cut off from the main flow of supplies coming from Chunking.

  They continue to unload troops.  We hit another sub.   Oh yeah, that's what I call a good hit! Lets hope she's full of planes.  Lets see if we got that CVE!  Oh well. Maybe we'll see it pop up in a few days. But there is a good chance she made it back to Pearl.

If I'm not mistaken, the Kido Butai ran into a random passenger liner on the way to Pearl Harbor, and the USS Hornet encountered a Japanese fishing trawler on the way to launch the Doolittle Raid. In the case of the former, the KB went on ahead regardless, while the Hornet had to immediately launch the raid (I think also because the trawler was part of a deliberate search cordon), and the added distance away from Japan meant that the B-25s had even less range than they originally planned for.

The US built 50 of her type between 1942 - 1944, so there's one out of action for a little while. Each of them could carry 28 planes each, which means that there are potentially 1400 planes floating around on non-fleet carriers.

  They keep unloading troops to the slaughter.  Our carrier's aircraft get involved over Luganville.  They do bring down a Liberator.  We hit their landing force. We lose more planes than I would like to their CAP, but at least we got some hits in.  We make a surface attack on a small landing craft.  Then another. Good sub!  We drive off the Seadragon.  The Chinese launch a pointless attack.  Now to see if we can find that carrier!  We lose one, but gain three more!  Tomorrow could be a good day.   More troops are unloaded at Luganville.  Their carrier is in the area. I may have a chance of getting her now.  We begin to overwhelm the enemy troops.  Our airfield is targeted again.  We strike at Chengtu, we need to break through the forts first, but the base will be ours.  Right, time to re-vector the Kiddo Butai for one last strike at getting their carrier.

  This LCI doesn't survive the hit.  We bring down a Liberator.  That's a nice sized Tanker, but not a carrier.  Shame the planes can't make it through the CAP.  They hit back with much more force.  We continue to Grind at Luganville.  We continue to grind through their defences.  drat, the Carrier got the drop on us. They seem to be able to get more planes into the air, so its time to bail.  No Carrier.  The Unyo is going down though.

  That's a nice big one. I like hitting those.  We see another plane destroyed on the runway.  Yeah, that will make up for losing a carrier!  We took a major base.  But we lost our second carrier. We come out 350 points ahead overall.

Close. The SS Lurline is rumored to have detected radio transmissions from the KB while they were on their approach; Prange reports on this if memory serves. I don't recall any mention that KB detected the Lurline.
