Beastie posted:Going through and playing it with dev commentary is awesome. Literally every inch of their level design was completely intentional and the result of play testing things like crazy. Yeah, the dev commentary is incredible. These days I think all the Half Life games work better as atmosphere safaris. The gameplay hasn't aged all that great and yeah the gun combat has been outdone by other newer games (HL's shotgun is still pretty fantastic though) but the real reason Half Life game replays are still good is that every square inch of those games is full of atmosphere and mood to an almost unparalleled degree even today. Demon's Souls is the only game I can think of with a similar thing going on, where even just standing in some place without enemies and where nothing is actually happening is just as engaging as great gameplay. Maybe Morrowind is in that category too. There's not a whole lot else that touches it. And for thread content: Half Life 1's Xen level and everything after it was amazing and very good... as long as you enabled god mode and noclip to skip the bullshit. The atmosphere there was amazing too.

I think they address how people weren't too scared of them when they were insta-kill, so they had them knock you down to one and people absolutely panicked and started shooting everything in the room. They hid those fuckers well.

Unpopular opinion: When I play rpg's I tend to ignore crafting outside the most basic elements. Every time I play Skyrim I craft a few potions but completely neglect enchanting weapons and armor. I treat them like very laborious hack n' slashes. I don't have time to sit there enchanting things and weaving leather into a lovely loin clothe. I basically put the bare minimum into rpgs and tend to focus on the actual gameplay and not pay attention to stats spreadsheets.

We're not getting HL3. Kids these days don't give two shits about and don't even know what it is. The game is like 13 years old. I would settle for storyboards though.

Video with a large, expansive world tend to feel really empty. The quests are repetitive, places kinda look the same, and there's a lot of moving around, killing the same things. I wish games would scale down their ambition. It's much better to have a precisely designed small world that artfully hints at a bigger, believable universe than to try to encompass everything in one game. This probably isn't a very popular opinion given how wide open world games like GTA and Skyrim and Fallout are widely seen as the best. But I think this overambition is also gonna be why video games will always struggle to qualify as art. How can games that try to depict every detail of a world remotely compare to movies that very selectively choose its few details? When you stretch out a designer's priorities like that... there's no winning.

See, I totally agree with this, and it makes me genuinely not understand why the new gta games are popular. I get GTA 1, the top down one. There were tons of hidden secrets, but in the new ones, there's very little to discover that you haven't seen 100 miles ago. At least in fallout (but not new Vegas, don't understand how people can prefer it?) There's actually cool unique poo poo every few meters. Any new building is going to have something interesting about it, and if you wander a little while you'll find something weird.

I'm pretty burned out on open world games that don't allow hilarious co-op. Not sure if that is unpopular. Ghost Recon Wildlands is awesome with friends and is close to co-op Mercenaries as we'll ever get.

I think people love New Vegas so much because it is one of the few modern games that actually has role-playing. I wish they fleshed out the actual New Vegas area out a lot more and had less emphasis on the wasteland.

a bone to pick posted:I'm getting to the point where if a game even has crafting in it I'm just going to skip it. Crafting sucks in most RPG's and most games in general. FFIX's synthesis system was okay. Dead Rising had a good weapon-crafting system. Other than that, minecraft style punch element to get pieces to combine with other pieces is loving abyssmal and has actively made me hate any game I see with even a glimmer of that type of system. Surprisingly the most in-depth crafting system I've seen was in FFXI (not FFIX). The game had 8 elements and a crystal for each element. The crystal was the catalyst you used to combine other items. But you could critically fail/lose your poo poo based on a variety of factors. The day of the week (in game), phase of the moon, and direction you were facing all had an effect on whether or not you got HQ (+1, +2 etc.), simply made MORE of an item (like food), or hosed it up and lost everything. If you take that into account during the game's heyday where some items were incredibly rare due to be camped by Chinese real-money trade assholes you pretty much had a system where people would quit a game they played for years just because of one hosed up synth that cost them 30 million gil.
