I like the implication of that statement.

I have to wonder if all the poo poo the Lege and Abbott are pushing is basically designed to make Texas so inhospitable to gays, minorities, immigrants, poor people, and liberals that they just get us all to leave. Those of us with that option, anyway.

To be fair the entirety of Texas exists in Rodeo grounds, Highschool football fields and Church Buildings. Kinda odd that they keep their capital in my unincorporated city-state, especially since everything we do here makes them so angry. Is it too soon to light the Gov. Mansion on fire again?

Or gently caress it, he might actually win, and be president.

On the one hand I am for the preservation of trees and green spaces in general, but on the other, when you have to extend throwing-away-your-lovely-toilet-paper-in-the-garbage-rather-than-flushing-it regimen for three days while you wait for the city to OK a sewer line replacement because it runs near a tree, well, you get why the other side may have a point.

Come on Ilhan, lets go bag us a shitpost

Surprise! It's a personal vendetta.

quote:

“I live in the Governor’s Mansion now,” Abbott said last week during a radio interview on WBAP 820. “But, before that, I had a house. I wanted to cut down a very common pecan tree in my yard. And the city of Austin told me, ‘No.’ I could not cut it down.

Austin city officials said the process was standard, but didn’t know why Abbott said he had been told he couldn’t cut down a tree. City records show he was never denied permission to cut down a tree. Abbott’s office didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Other than the sick pecan tree, the city granted requests to remove a heritage elm tree in 2011 and a red oak and a magnolia in 2013 — all without denials or required mitigation. Permits indicate all three trees were in poor condition or dying.

Yeah the heritage tree ordinance isn't great but I thought the quote was funny.

There was a WaPo article the other day about city/state conflict in Austin and the thing they chose as emblematic was the dumb fight over trees at Austin Oaks instead of like, income nondiscrimination or something :jerkbag:

I have no idea why moderate, or at least non-Tea Party Republicans, can't challenge some of these guys from the middle, especially when they make votes that loving murder their own district. The current Senator from Lubbock made two huge votes for SB's 2&3 despite the fact that it kills his small towns on revenue and his small school districts, who abhor even the idea of vouchers. He was the final vote for both 2 & 3 that put it over the top, he got excoriated for it by the Avalanche-Journal but guess what, I bet he gets returned to the Senate next time around, because he's rabidly pro-life. It used to be axiomatic to "vote your district" but now it's "vote your scorecard/Tim Dunn's whims" and no one is paying any political price for it.

During the committee testimony on 2, they had armies of drawlin', cowboy hat wearin', rural-as-gently caress/conservative-as-gently caress city and county officials telling them they are going to completely destroy their ability to keep up with service demands in their communities, because this bill goes after local, rather than school, property taxing jurisdictions. It literally offers no actual property tax relief, it's a total smoke-and-mirrors show that isn't going to cut a dime off anyone's property tax bill. It'd be one thing if they were doing all this stuff to gently caress cities in order to get a meaningful tax reduction, but they are loving municipalities in order to be able to lie and say they did something about property taxes. No one is getting anything except a handful of state level pols who are trying to burnish their conservative cred so they can run for higher office.

You cannot offer meaningful property tax reform without delinking school finance from the property base, that's just the economic reality.

https://twitter.com/lmcgaughy/status/887020451226169346

I'm just so sick of this argument that the only thing that isn't wrong with our school finance system is the amount of revenue we spend on schools.

Tree ordinance chat: Very frustrating that a useful regulatory power morphed into a monster due to the anti-development folks desire for a weapon to completely block any and all development (after the same thing happened to the ability to modify drainage regulation). Maybe next time they could loving learn how to pick their battles or have the self control to not mount campaign after campaign under the guise of a particular ordinance when their clear real concern is change in general...

For fucks sake it got to the point where several people in this neighborhood were sneaking onto "for sale" properties to measure the trees so they could immediately complain if a demolition permit was requested.
