“Maybe we should just focus on diagnosing the problem and relating to people’s pain?” he recalled suggesting to her during her primary battle with Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

“No,” Clinton had replied. “This is a job interview. People want to know how I am going to fix it.”

well if this doesn't encapsulate 2016 I dunno what would

barack obama was so loving obsessed with seeming decorous and not being a loser that he repeatedly abandoned public efforts to make things happen (which he initially called for in the 2008 campaign -- and which people have repeatedly blamed the American people for "losing interest" in politics afterwards)

I will never forgive Obama and the centrist Democrats for completely and utterly ignoring the Wisconsin labor protests in 2010-2011

Obama is a bad person, and his carefully constructed and curated public image and character (which is completely loving fictional) is emblematic of the worst traits of the Democratic party and is why we're where we are today wrt politics in the West. Trudeau and Macron are following along in Obama's mold, I just hope they don't end up being similarly disastrous for their countries.

quote:

Pelosi, who describes herself as an “antiestablishment establishment person,” had come to Atlanta with a resolution to reinstate Obama’s ban. She immediately ran into furious opposition. “We lost a thousand seats because we didn’t have corporate money,” one senior party functionary assured her. Pelosi dismissed her argument. “There was plenty of money,” she told me, in spite of Obama’s ban. As for the $18 million in corporate funds that came in after the ban was lifted, that went straight into Clinton’s campaign chest.

quote:

Like the Kansas district, Georgia’s Sixth had been electing Republicans for years. This time around, however, the D.N.C. gave the long-shot Democrat its blessing, not least because he attracted astonishing sums of money: more than $8 million two and a half weeks before the vote (to the immense gratification of the local election-industrial complex). With the money came a slew of high-powered Democratic consultants, who, as such people tend to do, cautioned Ossoff to hew to the political center—advising him, for example, to stay away from the Women’s March on January 21. (He had the good sense to ignore this advice.) Equally tellingly, they cautioned him against investing in yard signs, thus following election-industry wisdom that dismisses such cheap campaign tools as unscientific.

hahahaha

quote:

She recalled how Ossoff wonkishly informed her that “the data” decreed yard signs ineffective. In response, she told the candidate that if he didn’t “reach us up here on an emotional level and give us hope, we have a hard time getting engaged. If you put signs out, we feel that someone is paying attention, and that our voice matters and our votes matter. We haven’t seen yard signs that weren’t Republican in decades.” Gearing up for the June runoff, Cox said, “The energy here is electric.” Her message was clear: “We are here. And no Republican seats are safe.”

well I don't think Trudeau is going to be responsible for blowing up Canada, our insane housing market and lack of secondary industries will take care of that.

Some of the smarter liberals at the provincial level are starting to cut left in a very traditional canadian fashion where the liberal party takes left-wing policy ideas and then half-asses the creation so they sort of work but are marred by some ridiculous extra thing to make right-wing people happy like means testing or public-private partnership or whatever

Support from the antiwar movement would have positively flatlined if she'd won the primaries. Like her technical popular vote victory was literally her spitefully insisting on doing a convention in MI after everyone assumed it was over. Sanders was infinitely more gracious in defeat in 2016 than she was in 08.

Regardless of anything else you may think about Obama, you cannot claim he didn't take campaigning seriously, or that he didn't know how to keep things running out on the trail.
