my favorite axes are those chopping ones that are also kinda sledge-hammer as well axe + sledgehammer is a potent mixture used to love tapping manholes with my huge sledgehammer to help loose them to open em up

They are actually fairly dull. It's the pressure applied at the "dull" edge to the flesh that causes hydroshock and bone separation. Think of a butcher's cleaver, they aren't particularly sharp, but they are quite capable of separating bone.
