Again, uhhhhhhhh

I don't get how, in these days of auto-everything, it;s possible for a major disaster to occur simply because a pilot aims for the wrong lights on the ground.

I'd have thought that there would be a 'Don't crash, rear end in a top hat' buzzer, or a warning light marked 'not the runway' or even the navigation system announcing 'recalculating route!' to let them know that they've screwed up.
Maybe a 'Harrison Ford Incoming!' klaxon in the tower.

Something more sophisticated other than a pilot on the ground happening to look in their direction at the right moment.

So your #2 radio faulted in such a way that not only didn't transmit or receive, but at a key moment of flight it approved your landing for you? Or you just elected to land in the blind without trying radio 1 in response to deafening silence on 2?

e: "We don't hold you guys at fault at all". Har.

Their second radio was found to be faulty. They were flying into an airport with an uncontrolled frequency in the middle of the night, so not getting a reply was taken to mean no one was down there. And they didn't try the first radio because they were required to keep it tuned to Centre, which is the authority who gave them clearance to approach in the first place. Not hearing anything on the second radio frequency would normally indicate there was no objection to landing. The ground crew should have been looking out for planes as standard, and calling out warnings if they saw one.
It's a frightening cock-up, but more to do with procedure than pilot error.

It does seem like putting a big illuminated X on the runway, to match the daytime markings, would be a good idea

There was an illuminated, flashing X in the landing area of the closed runway, according to the news. So the pilots missed that as well as the differing colors/configurations of the runway and taxiway lights. And then the air controller didn't seem to mind when they mentioned lights on the "runway", because he assumed they were approaching the empty runway instead of the taxiway. It was really lucky that the united pilot looked out the window, in the right direction, at just the right time.

Bike cop on-board camera. About 2 minutes in he starts chasing another motorcycle, apparently for speeding. Watch as the most unbelievably dangerous police chase ensues. The fugitive is going triple-digit speeds through dense residential zones, riding against traffic and splitting between cars...and the cop follows right behind him for twenty minutes.

It's :psypop: that the police department allows it and :psyboom: that nobody dies.

Major pants-making GBS threads moments around 4:00, 6:20, 10:30 but the whole thing is insane.

6:20 where they loving collide and keep going

Does anyone know what proper procedure for a motorcycle chase like that is in Finland? Do they just get followed until they crash on their own or run out of gas? Are you allowed to knock them over at a certain speed?

No idea. In the UK it would be called off as a danger to the public/handed off to an aerial unit while ground units pursued at a less insane speed.

"You can't outrun a radio" is usually how it goes in the USA like, just... use technology? The OJ chase, probably the most famous car chase in history, was supported by calling out a bunch of stuff and literally getting people off the highway so he could safely do Whatever he wanted in relative isolation. It takes 30 seconds to call for a cordon of X area. I guess with the motorcycle it's a bit harder but still, like, what do you gain?

Especially if it's a misdemeanor offense. I struggle to comprehend the benefit of putting so goddamn many people in danger (including yourself, as the cop!), except for the redemption of some sorta bizarro testosterone trophy.

For a real class act it's hard to go past Australia's current foreign minister, Julie Bishop. She led the legal term that did its utmost to prevent asbestos claims against CSR from being heard, their preferred tactic being to delay cases as long as possible so the victim would die before the case appeared in court.

I honestly assume this is because they don't have as many high speed chases in Finland (or wherever) that we do in the US so less times it's gone wrong with deaths so it hasn't been changed in police policy yet.

Now you've suggested it, I really want to see that on a map as well. Looking at the start of the video, they are either on or heading towards Helsinki via route 51, with a right turn coming up onto route 101 to Otaniemi. But I'm too poo poo in Google maps to work out where that is.

and finishes about here - https://www.google.com.au/maps/plac...8637!4d24.67216

Let's take normal 120V outlets and supply them them 240V. Also male-male suicide plugs. :psyduck:

Also I've seen installations where people put relays in the gutter and that's sleazy and crappy because you'll tear apart equipment going "where the HELL IS THAT RELAY?" "They wouldn'tve put it in the gutter space would they?" And lo and behold they put the relay in the gutter or other interstitial space.

If one end is plugged in to a live socket the pins are live and present a very real risk shock. They are also commonly associated with having screwed something up somewhere else and can be a red flag that the rest of the installation is, at the very least, a little suspect.
