Dangerous question of the day: why are the series' merfolk designed as fish from the knees down, opposed to the traditional waist down? Everything about this seems like a miserable existence for them :(

The aquatic adaptation of merpeople is a combination of cetaceans and seals. Cetaceans' tails are actually their tails, their hindlimbs have gone all vestigial and are just small bones inside their bodies, like the midlimbs of merpeople. But seals' tails are a fusion of the hindlimbs like merpeople's tails. Seals don't have that gap that merpeople do though. I don't know of any animals in our world that developed a tail in that way. But of course the fossil record is very patchy, and I'm not even sure how easy it would be to tell an adaptation like that just from the skeleton, fused at crotch vs. fused with a crotch gap.

Go figure the series that goes into excruciating detail on the anatomy of centaurs has the same approach on merfolk.

oh yeah a quality of life FYI for anyone watching stuff on Amazon, you can change how the subs look -- different colors, sizes, level of background transparency. May depend on what you're watching on, but you can also have 3 presets. There's a settings menu at the top right when you're on the Amazon Video page and it's under there. You can also adjust when you're playing a video which is what I had been doing but also found this setting page and it has way more options.

You are not one of us.
It's real charming. Episode 4 looks to have both of my favorite characters from the partially translated LN I found, so I'm looking forward to next week.

Also, someone mentioned a while back about how different worlds have little differences that would make food taste weird, and the anime addressed that a lot quicker than the LN did. Just in case that was for some reason keeping someone from checking this show out.

I see what folks were complaining about in Centaur ep 2, but I got used to the slightly slower line delivery after the opening bit, and the episode as a whole was pretty good. It helped that the stuff after that opening bit actually had music. It's mostly coasting on the underlying strengths of the manga and not adding much, though, and I hope it improves.

I didn't get the complaints about Centaur's Worries either. It's not the most high budget production ever but the animation and voice acting were both perfectly fine.

The weird world building stuff is the most confounding thing with this show to me, that and starting like in the middle of a school festival thing going on. Although them not knowing how horses walk is funny to see in gif form. Will have to see if episode 2 seems better haha.

The off hand references to weird poo poo going on in the world is my favourite part of the manga, it's pretty much SoL Invasion of the Body Snatchers (the 70's one).

Yeah, it owns bones. The thing is that I started reading it like 2 or 3 years ago. The first time I saw the Jack-Skellington-esque expressions of the little sister I almost choked on my lunch because I couldn't stop loving laughing like a complete moron.

I might be sticking with the quiz anime just because the second episode used Zettai Ryouiki as a Chekhov's gun

churchboys show is kinda wild, like the pace felt breakneck and it never really stopped to catch a breath between some new "miracle' or somebody getting brutally murdered. I watched the first two episodes back to back and I think I might continue to watch it in chunks especially if the mysteries are going to be contained in short arcs (assuming this first one wraps up w/ep3); I think the pacing will work better like that rather than speeding headlong into a week's wait for the next part.

Is it basically anime X-Files?

something revealed early on that is then used later in the plot

although i'd call that example more of a "recurring gag" of the episode without any knowledge of it beyond just that clip

Yeah, I know what it is, I was confused because a gag isn't part of the plot? Like, I was expecting the answer to be an important question in one of the final rounds of the quiz games later, maybe.

the zettai ryouko crap and the constant falling apart of the mc cause of GIRLS (honestly i haven't seen this big of a wimp in years) are one of the reasons i dropped the quiz show because it betrays a total lack of confidence in its subject matter. it also looks like total poo poo

Uhh, it is exactly that later in the episode, I just didn't include it in the webm cause y'know.. incentive to watch the episode.

Nitrousoxide posted:

not...really? I mean I guess you could equate church with FBI and demons with aliens but the two leads don't even have a Mulder & Scully vibe imo.

I'm not entirely sure what its thing is since only 2 eps in it hasn't gone fully in on either being non-supernatural/totally mundane explanations for everything or actually some supernatural things mixed in with the mundane. Maybe after the third episode I'll have a better feel for it in that department.

e - On the leads: they have different specialties (smol one is math/science and tall one is ancient texts) and the tall guy gives off a more casual vibe where the little guy seems a bit more straight laced but I didn't get a skeptic vs believer vibe from them, they both seemed pretty faithful but maybe there will be conflict with that later. They're pretty easy to ship at least; hopefully it'll tease a little in that direction what with that fairly unsubtle fujobait ED
