Rebekah del Rio sang that song on her last record (it was written by Lynch/Neff in '01), and it isn't blatantly autotuned there. Seems very intentional in the version on the show, since she can still belt out those notes as of last year during that Lynch concert. Lynch used some heavy autotune w Chrysta Bell on some tracks too, even though she's pretty awesome without it. It's just a thing he likes sometimes *shrug*

The biggest mystery of this ep was the girls hanging out with the casino dons. When they were watching Brett Gelman get beat up I thought they were just kind of set dressing, but they are apparently also incompetent servants? I'm not sure why they were so insistent on sending Candy, they could have asked one of the other girls when she was spacing out

Seeing as they were reluctant to fire her ("she's got nowhere else to go") it seems like they have some desire to take care of her, but then they also directly involve her in all of their shady business meetings.

So this is what, the third "assassinate Dougie" plotline we're in? I wonder if this one will actually be successful, to some degree. Dougie has been this walking invincible guy for a while now so maybe his luck's about to run out. I wonder if he'd get shot and then maybe get a visit from the woodsmen like doppelganger did.

The impression I got was that they're normally competent, but Candie "broke out of it" for lack of a better term when she slugged Mitchum 1 with the remote control.

I like Dougie-Coop, and neither want nor expect him regaining his intelligence would make things go back to the way they were in the old seasons, since there's some evil poo poo afoot and his reputation has been besmirched for the past 25 years, but I'd also like some kind of dramatic change in his situation so he's closer to full consciousness and actually does something to show it.

In the ads they've been running for this season we see Good Cooper driving a car alone at night, so no matter what happens, we know that he's going to be able to drive by the end of this. Unless that was a fakeout Lynch through in?

crowoutofcontext
Nov 12, 2006

So let me get this straight:

-Dougie Cooper was "manufactured" in 1997 with no documents testifying to his existence and displaying odd behavior that is blamed on a presumed car accident

-At the same time "Dougie Cooper" also got his job at Lucky 7 Insurance

-Dougie Cooper and an experienced senior employee of Lucky 7, Anthony Sinclair, were involved in insurance fraud for Duncan Todd. The owner of Lucky 7, Bushnell, is unaware of their behavior. We have no idea if Danzig Cooper is aware of this

-Evil Cooper is aware of the time and place of Dougie Cooper's soul-switch and trusts Duncan Todd to get him him assassinated minutes after the switch as he leaves a shady neighborhood.

-Todd's hitwoman fails so he hires the infamous Ike who also fails.

-Todd calls Anthony Sinclair to reveal an insurance fraud case that Dougie and he had against Todd's personals rivals, the Mitchum Brothers, owners of Silver Mustang casino. This would give motivation for the Mitchum's to hire a hit instead of Todd. The Mitchum brothers are also under the impression that Dougie-Coop scammed them out of a shitload of money during his Mr.Jackpots thing.

Did I gently caress up any details? It seems a tad convoluted now with the information dump of last episode but I find its all going to make more thematic sense than the original mill burning subplot

I wonder if this ties into the Giants clues about "two birds one stone" because Dougie will probably bumble his way into bringing down both Duncan and the Mitchum brothers. Evil Cooper's plans will be hosed because trying to control a hierarchy of people through appealing to their fear and greed and worst natures will ultimately end up with them short-circuiting the master plan for petty and vindictive reasons.

She thinks it's her husband. He just recently fought off an armed assassin and seems pretty capable, even if he is thoroughly spaced out. You have no idea what led up to that scene, so I don't think it's reasonable to assume Cooper wasn't on board. People's inability to perceive the time in the edits is leading to silly leaps of logic.

Hes literally been depicted as mentally incapacitated and just barely repeating things people show him the whole time he's been back. It's not that ambiguous. A guy who can't pee without instruction can't consent.

This isn't meant to be some kind of hot take. That scenes humor just didn't land with me because it's pretty cut and dry ethically.

Edit:as far as "she thinks it's her husband", people commit rape every day without thinking that they are. That's why clear ability to consent is so important.

Ah yes, clearly this man is not having a good time. Clearly this was a bad experience for him. Clearly someone should notify the authorities.

I think everyone blowing the rape-whistle might have a leg to stand on if Coop had popped out the socket and she immediately jumped his poo poo. That isn't the case. There have been many references to the time that's passed since Cooper came back to the house. He's got more agency and capability since then. The man is going to work. He is fighting off assassins. The core of my argument, which you have conveniently overlooked in favor of a facile argument against the myth that rape doesn't occur in marriages, is that you have no idea what is happening in the space and time between editing cuts. Cooper has certainly shown interest in coffee and badges and other things. Why is it impossible to think that he might have given her a clear indication of interest during that gap in time? Furthermore, why is it the responsibility of the person making the show to make sure to show something on-screen for no better reason than to make sure that a bunch of goofballs with hyperactive imaginations won't assume that something insidious is happening when they see two adults having sex and both clearly enjoying it? This, when you have just as much indication that everything is cool as you do that what you're seeing is non-consensual and inappropriate.

Right before Richard Horne arrives to be a terrible monster, the scene where Johnny Horne is sitting at the table staring at that hideous Robot-Monster-Looking teddy bear, there seems to be brief, tiny flashes of green light on both of his legs, one after the other. Sort of like when Coop was drawing on the insurance case files. Unlike the case file lights it looks like a practical effect, like someone with a laser pen is off camera.. OR it could just be incidental light, I guess.

I took it as being something to comfort him so he doesn't run headfirst into a wall again, like some attempt to give him access to 24/7 attention. It was definitely creepy-looking, but I was still really tense while Richard was stuffing all the stolen stuff into the purse because I thought for sure the sound was going to piss him off and he'd end up smashing it to torment Johnny even more.

That whole scene had a real Clockwork Orange vibe to me, probably my favorite scene in the episode even though it was the hardest to watch.

I thought it was easily one of the more intensely effective scenes we've seen on the show. There was a lot of brutal, animal-like behavior from both Richard and Amanda Seyfried's loser boyfriend that I thought was really just... frightening, and terrifying, even.

I really hope Richard doesn't turn out to be the kid of Cooper's Doppleganger. In a way, I would find it very disappointing. What's scary about Richard to me, after watching that scene especially, is that it's the sort of malignant and cruel behavior that always seems to thrive in the underbelly of the show. I sorta felt the two prostitutes (assuming) from the end of season 2 were sort of a piece with this, as well as Renault's monologue about insisting to get paid for peddling underage girls.

I don't know why, but I found their sadly bizarre talk about the Penguin and whatnot to be creepily evocative in the same way as the weird drugged-out talk in FWWM when Laura and Donna go get wasted in the night-time underbelly of the town's world.

I think that person's point (not the one you quoted, the one further up) was that from our perspective it was but from the perspective of the characters in the show, who legitimately don't know better, it wasn't.

I think that's kind of a literalistic response to a thematic point.

The original show was very much about the far-reaching impact that one death (and one act of killing) can have, even if there were some other deaths that were less consequential. That was the premise that set this whole thing in motion. Laura's musical theme hung over the show like a pall over the town, as everyone's grief played out.

By comparison, there's been a stupendous body count in this new season- a decapitation, a monster attack, an office full of women being stabbed, a kid getting run over, umpteen shootings, more poo poo I'm probably forgetting- and the world keeps on turning. And many (most?) were complete innocents. Some of these deaths have been investigated, but very few have been grieved. Even if there's canon explanations for why some deaths have more of an impact than others, there's an undeniable difference in the message and worldview that come across.

This is fair, I assumed you meant deaths happening only in the town of Twin Peaks, in which case I'd rebut that the kid getting run over and Richard's subsequent mayhem will probably make waves in the town.

As far as the entire show is concerned though, I agree.
