Going to have to eat a bit of crow('s eye) for repeatedly bringing up longships now, been looking a bit more closely at the ships in the big fleet shot and they don't really look like longships. Googling around a bit on medieval ships, I think they look a lot like Caravels. They were used heavily by the Portuguese to sail around the world so a fitting parallel for what the Ironborn would need for their far-flung voyages. Crew numbers seem to be about 20, with mention of some smaller ones with as few as 9. 20,000 sailors might even make the Ironborn numbers needed sound reasonable.

[Edit] The ships still look super-fancy, though. I wonder if they held off on launching the fleet until they found enough cans of gold paint to bling them up.

Again, it's rough and according to the showrunners not all the storylines are happening concurrently. Each season/gap between season together is meant to cover about a year. That's why Robb's war is talked about as having been years-long, Sam says he's known Jon for years at one point in like season 4, etc., etc. The Wall last year is another example where things just went straight back to what happened right afterwards. However, all the stuff raising an army and preparing to attack Winterfell, etc. definitely took a very long time.

However, the stuff in Kings Landing at the beginning of last season was not minutes or a day or two after the Walk of Shame, it was clearly a while later. Jamie sailing back from Dorne clearly took a while too. The Hound definitely didn't get found and nursed back to health and become a functioning member of a hippy commune in a week or two.

I hope we get a closer look at Euron's boat, Silence. From the wiki

quote:

The Silence is red, lean and fearsome. It has a single mast, black sails, and dark red hull. Its decks are painted red to better hide the blood that soaked them. On the prow is a mouthless maiden of black iron with long legs, slender waist, high breasts and mother-of-pearl eyes. The Silence is crewed by mutes and mongrels from throughout the known world.

Hope we get a shot of someone tied to the prow of the ship like how Aeron ends up in Winds of Winter.

The ironborn should just drop the whole viking gimmick and make a killing in the shipbuilding business. Must be plenty of kings and nobles in game of thronos or whatever the world is called who'd pay top dollar for one of those.

I imagine a lot of that is cast salary. edit: I found some articles that claim that each of the 5 top billed actors (Tyrion, Jaime, Jon, Dany, Cersei) are getting paid $2 million per episode for the last two seasons so yeah. After they pay everyone else, I'd imagine the actual budget for each episode is a couple million.

That's a solid paycheck considering even the main characters usually have only a few scenes per episode.

In the first age, in the first battle, when the shadows first lengthened, one sat.

He chose the path of perpetual contentment.

While not as extreme as the last dude, I didn't like the Arya with the Lannister soldiers scene. One of the points in the books is that even Brienne, a 6'2" armored knight and one of the best sword fighters in Westeros is afraid of being a woman alone on the road. She actively avoids being around groups of men and is wary of anyone, even people that have been decent and kind to her following her or knowing where she camps. Arya just walks up to a group of armed soldiers and sits down with them.

Eh, they've established that plenty. I am fine with them showing that occasionally, occasionally people aren't monsters. Also the fact that this is the default adds a lot of tension to the scene and a good payoff when we are actually treated to something other than miserable rape-monster people.

e: if you want a show that just wallows ceaselessly in nihilistic human depravity and features hordes of ineffectual ghouls a&e has got you, fam.

Yeah, it all boils down to leverage. HBO makes a fuckton more money than that off the show, and it's not like they can just recast Tyrion like they did with The Mountain.

Jaime got 2 million this episode to walk around a map for 90 seconds and say 2 lines to Euron Greyjoy

Having not read very far in the books, I legit thought that Euron must have some supernatural thing that stopped aging or something. Turns out he's just 30 years younger than his brother I guess.

Why don't you perform zazen, facing a wall?
Aeron might as well not exist like Victarion, he has nothing in common with the book character but a name and a job.

This episode was alright, albeit with a lot of the show's standing flaws like random expansions and collapses of time and space for plot convenience, wildly inconsistent treatment of women, generally terrible dramatic pacing. At this point they mostly seem focused on giving the actors chances to bounce off each other and creating a sumptuous visual experience, which is fine because they're not going to salvage the plot.

I like that Jaime actually points out how terrible and stupid the strategic situation is at this point though it doesn't give me any hope that they will write it to make sense at all.

I continue to feel that they missed a trick on Euron's character design, they are writing the character as this hilariously confident and rude Jack Sparrow type and the actor is almost up to it, but he just looks like a random tough in leather pants. The character is so over the top, they couldn't scare up a wig or an eyepatch for the guy?

The poo poo montage was good stuff. Very Gurm

They finally ponied up for an exterior shot of Dragonstone worth a drat -- was the big Valyrian dragon head always on the wall of Stannis' map room?

What annoys me about the whole Greyjoy thing in the show is that...they LOST. These guys that had like a fleet of 100 ships and men to sail them, and then could built 1000 more ships and have more men to sail them in a small amount of time LOST the rebellion.

Up till last season the Greyjoys were a joke family not much unlike the Freys (and the show kept drawing attention to this parallel this very episode to boot!). Everyone that interacted with Theon went like "hahaha your family sucks", they barely had enough men to take some understaffed northern keeps or mount a proper rescue mission to save Theon, and now they have the GREATEST FLEET OF THE 14 SEAS!!

This is what makes me not take show Euron seriously at all, the fact that he arrived too late to the game, had 2 scenes that together don't add up to more than 10 minutes and was suddenly promoted to arc villain after the previous arc villain died and the show and the actor want to make us believe he is more :moreevil: than a psycho kid who killed the decoy protagonist, was a dick to everyone and had 2 powerful armies full of named characters on his side, or the psycho teen that gave us a full season of torture porn and shirtless plot armor, gave us another season of rape and 20 good men, gave us YET another season of plot armor of winning and had the North and Stannis' army on his side.

Oh, and also the fact that in the books, he claims that he was able to sail and return from Not-Mordor something considered to be impossible. He may be lieing, but he has the horn and Valyrian armor to back up his claims.

Ashai is never hinted at being a no-man's-land, it's just very far away, we don't know much about it because it represents the far and mysterious orient as perceived by medieval europeans but at no point does anyone indicate that Ashai is Zahadum, or Mordor. It's just a place, possibly has a lot of mystics and is rumored to be the birth place of dragons (even though The World of Ice and Fire suggests that Dragons are unnatural creatures bred from the volcanic wyrms found in Valyria).

In the books the faceless men definitely do a little more than just contract killings and euthanasia, you just need to look at Jaqen and wonder wtf he is up to to realize that the faceless have some long term scheme they're working on.

Obviously they're also the ones who brought down the Valyrian empire and are likely involved with the death of the targaryen dragons in the Targ civil war, but it also seems that they are not allied with the Maesters who are apparently striving for similar goals so there might be a little more here.

It's never made clear, but it's also hinted that gold or killing some random shmuck as payment ala Dark Brotherhood won't work. They are...mysterious.

Like the origin story of them has the slaves of Valyria asking for freedom from the slavers who force them to work in the mines all their life...so the Faceless Man kills them all. The slaves, not the slavers. Can't remember if the show brought this up.

But then, there's this ship insurance guy, who promises he will pay money to your family if your ship sinks, but then scams them, and apparently one of the widows manages to hire them to kill him without backfiring into "lol here let my knife free you"
