Oh how I loved those CD-ROM magazines and samplers. It was the best thing from a time I still didn't have internet at home. I used to buy lots and I'm pretty sure I already talked about it here in this thread. Spent so much time on the Windows 95 Game Sampler particularly, made by Monolith. They sure loved 2001 A Space Odyssey references cause there were lots. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C09QKLyYzUI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpTHVAUY48M

Man, those were the poo poo. I discovered so many cool games through those CD samplers, although I barely ever got the full versions of them. I actually still have some, including that Monolith Win95 sampler disk. I made an iso of it for when I want to get my nostalgia on.

I used to subscribe to a bunch of Mac-specific ones as a teenager, my favorite was MacAddict. It had some solid technical articles mixed in with a humorous tone and a big dose of Apple fanboyism. Then around 2000 or so they ran a controversial article about how to make fake IDs, their corporate parent threw a shitfit, and they changed their format a few months later, doing away with the humor and running content targeted at higher income adults. Of course by then the Internet was taking off and I could get my Apple news and shareware games online, so it wasn't a big loss.

This complication is likely why we never go more than 2 games and the machines seem to be quite rare. About 16 years ago, there was a NASCAR cockpit simulator at my local mall. They had sixteen stations. My buddy and I loved it so much that we each paid like $120 to do a simulated Winston Cup. Every Friday we'd go down there and race on a different track against 14 other people. You would earn points like real NASCAR and the winner of the series would get a trophy. We were kinda running the show at this pizza place at the time so everybody got free pizza. It was awesome.

I'm hoping one of you guys can remember a game for me. It was a point and click style game, and I played it in 1992 or 1993. I had remembered it as being a Blade Runner game, but apparently the only blade runner game like that came in 1997 so it could not have been that. I played it on a mac. It was definitely a dystopian future kind of thing, but I really don't remember details beyond that. edit: Lots of time spent googling leads me to believe it was Rise of the Dragon. Id tell you to play it but its one of those adventure games where youre on a global timer from the very start so its sort of a chore to actually play now. Obscure games? Anyone remember Majestic? It was like an ARG, where you could provide your email, AIM screen name, phone or Fax number. Very weird but way ahead of its time -- subscription based release, broken up into Episodes/Seasons (first ep free as a sampler), Friends List of players at similar stages as you, 'cooldown' time to prevent you from gunning through the story, and a multi-media mystery. The "game" started with an announcement saying the game devs had been firebombed and the game was cancelled. Then, an anonymous source emailed or called you about secret Majestic 12 Government Documents that were forwarded to you. This poo poo went deep, man. Fluoride in milk deep, man. Faked moon landing as a cover for the REAL moon landing so that the Reptilians could meet with their Grey overlords deep, man. The game would call or send you an IM at times, and you visited websites or talked to Contacts (basically AIM bots) or asked friendly allies for help. But you never really knew if ypu were talking to another dweeb, if they were misleading you, etc. I remember some rando freaking out on me and accusing me of being a Fake Player / Bot. Given the play style and cooldown limits, it was always going to be a niche title. But thankfully they released it at juuuuust the right time for it to be relevant. Yup July of 2001 was a GREAT time to release a conspiracy-based game that called into question media narratives and placed the player in the middle of a vast web of doubt. (Not that they could have forseen 9-11 but drat did that game get shut down quick afterwards...)

Yes, I remember Majestic, and I always wanted to check it out. Anyone remember the screensaver for The Game? This was a movie that came out in the late nineties starring Michael Douglas as a rich douche canoe who gets himself involved in a ~game~ that starts getting scary and creepy. The movie was roughly 7/10 but the promo Win '95 screensaver would also start screwing with you. You'd install it and it would run for a while, and then you'd discover an icon on your desktop. You'd double-click it. Then things would happen to lightly mess with you, asking questions about stuff. I mostly forget what, because I had no computer at home and had only installed it on a PC at my job, and I soon moved to a different workstation. Also because it was 20 years ago. e: only thing a quick YT search comes up with is this guy who has the floppy disk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5idB39vuf4Y doctorfrog has a new favorite as of 08:44 on Jul 20, 2017 |

Here's some footage from a CD-ROM based FMV "multimedia magazine". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGtP-86zBUI Quoting my friend who actually focuses on these sorts of things as his thing: quote:Multimedia magazines like this fascinate me because of the direction they expected all media to move in. The idea of an interactive video-based media magazine in the style of something like Spin or Rolling Stone isn’t too far off from what we have now, and it matches up with what other companies like Voyager predicted about the future of print media. This take, though, is so focused on creating a physical place rather than just being a page. You watch Bill Murray on a screen at a theater from an awkward angle, then you go up to the stage to talk to Ray Liotta. You meet Shaq on the street.
