This should have been about how, as the North started to look like they were winning, a League of Nations composed of a bunch of European powers steps in and deploys peacekeepers to "keep the peace", locking the north and south in an ugly stalemate which devastates their economies, leaving both dependent on European capital and goods, bringing both into massive debt, and forcing them to sell off their natural resources to repay it. European peacekeepers are essentially above the law and establish camptowns full of trafficked war widows and slaves to serve them.

There's evidence such an intervention was one of Napoleon III's reasons for the Mexican invasion in the first place. but that would require nuance, research, a willingness to portray the european colonial empires as forces of oppression and iniquity, etc.
