I got this title for the dumbest fucking possible take on sea shanties. Specifically, I derailed the meme thread because sailors in the 18th century weren't woke enough for me, and you shouldn't sing sea shanties. In fact, don't have any fun ever.

Is there anywhere that it's made with unadulterated sugar? I thought it was always HFCS or similar.

Yes; everywhere.

HFCS is real sugar (mixed with a bit of water, but whatever, Dr Pepper has water in it anyway). If you want to split hairs, what y'all are talking about is the difference between HFCS (a mixture of glucose and fructose, two types of monosaccharides (one-ring-of-atoms sugars), generally derived from corn) and sucrose (a disaccharide (two-rings-of-atoms sugar) made of glucose and fructose stuck together, which is generally produced via sugar cane or sugar beets). By the time the sucrose gets to your bloodstream, it has already been broken into its parts by digestive enzymes, making it chemically identical to HFCS. The two forms of the sugar do taste slightly different, and many people think that sucrose tastes better in sodas (although since the recipes are proprietary, this may be due to different amounts of sugar in the different versions, rather than a difference in the chemical properties).

But don't go around calling HFCS not sugar; that's a ridiculous statement that only serves to spread anti-science fearmongering about things with chemical names.

(And I know you didn't mention this, but I wanted to nip it in the bud: people who extol the virtues of sucrose over HFCS often claim sugar is healthier. It's not. Like I mentioned earlier, they're chemically identical by the time they get into your bloodstream, since the sucrose will have been split into its fructose and glucose parts.)

They're not *quite* identical. Sucrose is 50:50 fructose:glucose. The HFCS that's used in sodas is 55:45 fructose:glucose. So it's a whopping 5% more fructose than you'd get from "real" sugar.

Based on my experience, it's not so much a flavor difference, although Pepsi Throwback does taste different to normal Pepsi, but it's a mouthfeel difference. HFCS feels a bit slimier after you drink it, where "real" sugar has a much cleaner feel. There's very little taste difference in the Mountain Dew HFCS/Throwback varieties, but Throwback FEELS a hell of a lot better to drink. Sorta like Sprite vs Sierra Mist. Sprite FEELS like drinking syrup, where Sierra Mist doesn't.

Sierra Mist tastes like drinking fetid garbage water. Sprite feels like being sick in the 4th grade. Both are inferior soda choices and if you must have a lemon-lime then Jarritos (lime) is the only acceptable option. Any of them work mixed with vodka though. Which is the only time I ever drink lemon-lime soda.

Does Surge still exist? I haven't seen it in forever. IF it does and it's a regional thing (like Sundrop not being available in Chicago :argh:) then I'm gonna be annoyed. If we're going citrus sodas then Sun Drop is hands down the best. Probably my favorite soda, but I can never get it.

This rubs me the wrong way. It's a free code that was bundled with a preorder for a couple days early access to an open beta. No where in my mind does 3 days of 1 feature crippled hype level constitute $20 when it was never stated during preorder that the charge would be applied for cancelling and the full game is only twice as much.

I didn't get charged or anything but it still bothers me. The shadenfreude is me.

It is a code that was free because you preordered. Generally, if you redeem something, you bought it, especially since "A couple days early access to an open beta" isn't something you can refund.
