Tatar has good possession numbers, has been consistently healthy, and is probably a more reliable 50+ point guy if he didn't play on this shithole team.

He's a complete waste during a rebuild, so why not sign him forever!

exactly. he's a solid player that can contribute to a good team, a waste on a basement dwelling team i.e. the Detroit Red Wings National Hockey League Franchise. right now he has value that can be traded for picks at least, a prospect (or two???) if you're lucky.

honestly that contract is probably fair market value, especially given the term. and if i was holland i'd be doing the same thing--hoping this team bounces back and squeaks into the playoffs. it's the only way he keeps his job.

He can still be traded next year (it's obviously not in the immediate plans but anyway) for some kick rear end assets if his level of play keeps up.

A bunch of contending teams would be happy swapping him for picks & prospects at that contract so aftet Holland is replaced this signing can offer value.

Also why the gently caress did Trevor Daley sign there or is he in decline.

His offence kind of makes up for it but he's the kind of player you get to fill out a blue line on a team that already has a few good defensemen already. Y'know, unlike the Red Wings. Maybe he'll teach their young guys how to win because apparently all the other old guys on the Wings already forgot how??

Good lord, I know the Penguins aren't a team that has a lot of margin for handing out bad contracts but Dumoulin is pretty easily worth what he's asking and the team's offer is a hilarious lowball. He's easily the best left handed D on the team and probably isn't far behind Schultz in terms of his value to the team in general.

Dumoulin is not worth anything close to 4.35m. 3 million on the extreme outside.

My god I hope they don't pay him.

Yeah that's some Muzzin/Martinez money and he's not as good as they are.
He's pretty much David Schlemko so anything more than like 3.5 is pretty out there.

Matt Cane's salary prediction algorithm has Dumoulin at $2,478,105 but it's pretty bad with players with only a couple years of history.

I feel like Ekholm is a pretty fair comparison, and he's not even as good as Ekholm. If he will only sign long-term for $4m+ I say that's grounds for a sign-and-trade.

Good news for Edmonton fans, I chatted hockey with Jussi Jokinen today during a family gathering and the knee injury that bothered him all of last season was succesfully treated in May. So he had an injury free off-season for once in every regard and it's been great, look for him to have an extra step compared to his last campaign...

(That said, it feels all vets who have accumulated a dozen or two lingering injuries always say off-season has been great and they are 100% again and so on and thus forth.)

Speaking of Stromes, why did Matthew Strome fall to #106 in the draft this year? The scouting reports seem to mostly be glowing, except for his skating, which is apparently horrible?

What attitude problem?
Player asks and team asks mean nothing for arbitration because they either get something in the middle or hit a deal before they have to accept/decline the decision.

I forget who it was but there was something after the 06 lockout where there was a hilarious discrepancy in the two demands, like $9 million because why not shoot for the stars.

I'm guessing both of the elders being seen as somewhat disappointing so far affected people's on the third and whether or not he would improve in the future.

Like if Dylan had Marner's year, people could say "well, Dylan's skating wasn't so hot and he turned out fine!"

He's both big is and from a prominent hockey family so for the scouts not to like him is a bit telling. His stats for his draft year are good but not that far ahead of the average 4th rounder, pretty far behind Ryan and Dylan's draft years.

I still think Nashville should probably have traded Ekholm or Ellis for Duchene before the expansion draft, then they could have protected Neal as well

That being said, extremely stoked that the core of the team is locked up long term assuming the Johansen deal is done soon
