I have a Sun Mountain Sync and yeah it is skewed towards cart bag but not obnoxious about it. It fits great with my Bag Boy push cart as well.

I also have a Sun Mountain 3-5 stand bag that I don't really like but use for road trips as it takes up less trunk space.

I'm eyeing the ping pioneer or the sun mountain phantom cart bag. My current stand bag fits ok in my push cart but I have to adjust it every few holes and the backpack strap broke a few weeks ago so I had to rig it up so it can still be carried. Good bags are expensive though, and there aren't many on eBay either.

Lay it on the ground, or sometimes, leave it standing upright on its end. Mostly I ride carts, but I also travel and sometimes walk, so don't want a cart bag. The legs get in the way on the cart, in the travel case, and frankly, I don't like standing it up anyway. Thanks, Bilirubin, I appreciate it.

I have an older Sun Mountain without legs, and I much prefer 14 hole bags, so it's just harder and harder.

I did a bad bad bad thing this afternoon.

I went to golf galaxy and traded in my callaway 3 wood and bought a new 3 wood.

I hit all the usual suspects

New Ping, Callaway, Titleist, TM M2, and then I got to the M1.

All the other clubs were my normal 245-265 rollouts.

That drat M1 though. My normal left to right fade even on mis hits had no issue carrying 245 and 265 rollout.

Club head speed averaged around 108-110.

When I turned the ball over right to left though, holy poo poo, 4 straight times in a row I carried the ball 275 and rolled out to 298! I know you think I'm kidding and I would've thought the same if I hadn't done it 4 straight times. Club head speed of 110 with a spin of around 3800 got me to 295+ every...drat...time.

So needless to say I now have a brand new M1 3 wood in my bag. Early tee time tomorrow morning so we'll see how it actually does on a course.

Hopefully you got these numbers in a bay with a GC2 in it. The Golf Galaxy near me has two fake simulator bays that give hilariously optimistic numbers. I can hit 7 irons 190 yards dead straight all day long in those.

Even GC2 can be jacked up.

Total distance is essentially irrelevant. Even on a driver, as long as spin is reasonable, under 2800 rpm or so, you'll get plenty of roll out.

110 mph clubhead speed with 3800 rpm spin is literally impossible to get to 295 yards unless you're on a concrete at elevation.

I mean every 3 wood I hit gave me the same numbers as the current 3 wood I had so the numbers I was getting were correct.

Spin/club head speed/etc were what I expected them to be

Just checked out the bag, and its a Powertek. I'm not sure they still make golf bags though; all their web site lists is gear for ice sports. Hope this somehow helps though.

Had my first range session with these S55s and I am in love. They hit straight and have narrow dispersion so its as close to point and shoot as I have ever tried. Even when I would drop my right shoulder and hit a bit behind the ball it still went straight, if 25 or so yards shorter. There seems to be a bit of a distance gap between the 9 and W but I will need to hit more to see if that is real or sampling bias.

Because the W is so strongly lofted at 46* (my old pitching wedge is 50.7*) I had a 10 degree gap to my sand wedge at 56*. Decided on filling it with a Glide 52* and it matches up with the pitching wedge pretty well--much more even distance than between 9 and W strangely, which are only 5 degrees apart. Its also a killer club.

Dammit Francis!
I have a mental block I need help with, it's a bit strange.

I struggle to hit the ball off a tee lately with anything that's not a driver. If I tee the ball up, even slightly, with an iron or hybrid I end up hitting it poorly. It's like I subconsciously try to sweep the ball instead of hit down on it.

It's kind of bizarre. I absolutely clobbered a couple 5 wood shots from the fairway and rough last round out, but try to tee off with it and I hit a weak rear end push.

Need to also figure out something on the greens, my putting has not been this bad, ever.

I can hit my 4W off the deck from the tee box all day long but god help me if I tee it up even a hair. I have no idea why that's the case.

Played a scramble yesterday and oh my god I can do no wrong with my driver with this shorter backswing. I'm sure I'm giving up distance but it's hard to argue with going 245-250 yards dead center as opposed to 270 sailing off to the right.

I've also all but given up on my hybrids and think I'm just gonna go back to a 3, 4 and 5 iron. I'm sure there's a good way to hit these but gently caress if I can figure it out.

I ditched my 3 hybrid and put my 5 wood back in my bag after I got my woods swing tuned up these last couple weeks. I'm sure my main problem with it is my poor ability to hit down on it just like my other irons but I hit the 5 so well now it seems like a waste to keep a great club out of my bag. I'm committing the rest of the season to being able to hit my new 4 iron well to fill that 195-210 yard gap. The courses I play have a few 200 yard par 3s that I used to hit the hybrid off the tee with and have varying success with, I think hitting my 4 iron well should make up for the hybrid loss.

DJExile
Jun 28, 2007

Yeah that's been my thing. I can hit my 4W about 225-230, and my longest non-hybrid iron right now is my 6, that i can hit about 170-175. Those longer par 3s are always a question of "ok do I dial down and play safe for a par or risk a hybrid flying off somewhere?"

E: I tried to use the 5hy as a rescue club and in theory that should be awesome but I just cannot get it going in practice, and at this point I'd rather just take my 6 or 7 out, pop out the ball and live for the next shot.

Shrapnig

Those distances make it seem like your gapping is way off for some reason.

Carrying a 5h seems odd to me too if you're hitting a 6 iron 170.

I've ditched my hybrids and woods entirely at this point. Driver, 21* driving iron, and 3-PW, 50*, 56*, 60*.

The driving iron's loft is a little much since it works almost like a 4 iron but I hit it much better off the tee and deck than my conventional 4 iron. It's perfect for short par 4s since I'm much more comfortable with a full iron shot for my second into a green as opposed to hitting a knock down or 3/4 shot or something like that.

It honestly may well be. I got these clubs fitted in like 2009 when my swing was a lot more vertical than it is now. I've always hit the irons well. Probably doesn't help that my 6i through lob wedges are all steel shaft while the hybrids are graphite, just makes for a much weirder feel when I go to them but try to swing them like an iron. I really haven't changed anything in this bag since that fitting and maybe I should look at finally overhauling things.

Played 9 tonight and absolutely striped my driver and woods save 3 shots where 2 were hooked and I topped a fairway 3 wood about 40 yards then hit a bomb 2 feet from the green afterwards. My slice is all but gone after my lessons which is a miracle. I didn't miss my hybrids at all and I was 8 of 9 fairways hit which I'm pretty sure is a personal best since maybe I was 17 or something. Best drive tonight was 286 yards with a nice mid high penetrating flight. Felt pretty amazing to be that dialed in with my woods.

My last lesson today was all about hitting down on the ball with irons when I've swept them my entire life. Tried it out on the round and my score definitely suffered for it, but my approach shots felt so clean when I actually got down on it and divoted the grass, I just had a tough time with my distances and always seemed to be a club short. I had a handful of 3 putts which didn't do me any favors either. Its definitely hard to not go back to sweeping at the ball to save strokes but I know the more I stick with the new iron swing the more it will pay off in the long term and hopefully in a couple years I'll have my scores in the mid to low 80s and not the low 100s :(

Time to go to the range tomorrow and hit a huge bucket of wedge and low iron shots I guess.

DJExile

Hit up youtube and watch Payne Stewart's swing if you want to really see how irons should be hit. He would put a ton of lag in his swing and was as good an iron hitter as there's been. His swing is basically golf porn.

E: It does also make sure that you get that divot ahead of the ball, which is what you want when you 'hit down' on it.

Question for the thread: as a beginner-to-intermediate (closer now to intermediate), are there any good "feel" tactics for drilling this skill? Imagine you are trying to hit a spot a few inches in front of the ball. You can measure your progress by using a couple tees 6 inches apart. Place golf ball right in the middle so you could draw a straight line through all three. Swing, and see where the divot is.

Wheels fell off today. Played my 3rd round in 3 days, 4th in 5 days. I guess I'm not as young as I used to be. Swing fell apart, and it got "shank" ugly. 39-46 at a tougher course but one I love and have excelled at, and that's with a fair number of mulligans too.

I even stretched for an hour before this round to alleviate any lower back soreness. Didn't feel it during the round, but I know I'll be feeling it tomorrow. Guys help. 😢

Edit: I also putted like a dummy, but the greens were very fast and very pure, so most of my missed were power lipouts, and I can take care of that.

When I'm having problems, I exaggerate the motion a bit, and it's probably a good way to get started. Assuming right handed golfer, think of your downswing as your right hand pulling down a window shade.

Kameh: as an actual old, let me give you a piece of advice from long golf trips...36 holes two or three days out of a 4 or 5 day trip: hot bath, or a long, long hot shower as soon as possible after the golf, and a long hot shower before golf the next day, along with big doses of Motrin.
