I'd be willing to bet that those darkened vertical lines are from sallen using a book or something to hold down the page while scanning it, and you can see the dark areas through the drawing. He then levels up the white areas of the picture so that the gutters look relatively pristine, which also explains why the coloring looks so harsh and why some of the thinner lines (around the dialogue bubbles for example) seem aliased.
