I saw them twice promote the brick kiss being shown live post-race and we're really grasping for things for fans to try and associate with at this point, aren't we?

The Brickyard has been a drought-ender a few times. I can think of Kahne, Newman, maybe Harvick(?) ending long droughts with a Brickyard win.

Paul Menard was a first and only time winner there, if the time prior counts as a drought

They need to just euthanize the 400. Leave IMS to Indycar. This was a shitshow from its 3pm (lol) start to the 9 pm mercy kill. If Truex doesn't mop it and take out Bush, this ends with the 18 leading 120 laps and winning by half a lap. It was a bad race and would have been unwatchable if it weren't for a gently caress up by the 78. Instead we get Jimmy Johnson channeling his inner 2012 Takuma Sato and NASCAR having to hold off a 4 car pile up caution so they could just put this shitfest out of its misery because the sun was setting and the track didn't have lights to keep going.

iospace posted:The sad truth though? All the lessons to be learned tonight? The race had good moments, but it feels like NASCAR is constantly juggling between making their regular season the most meaningful thing in the world and for the Brickyard to still be a marquee race that "matters". So it's kinda suffering for an identity crisis. The race is having to acknowledge that Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and other's are not walking through that door. NASCAR has to acknowledge that it's back to being the 3rd biggest event at that track rather than being the biggest like it once was for about a decade or so. I think it's far less about NASCAR and far more about the politics that seems to gravitate around Indianapolis to be honest. The support for Cup there at one time...mimicked that of IndyCar/Indianapolis 500. But when you have races at Chicagoland, and Kentucky? I don't see why you'd bother making the trek any more.

We all saw the attendance at that race. Most NASCAR fans should realize/know that Indy is a horrible venue for stock cars. How the hell does NASCAR not see what we're all seeing? "NASCAR is dumb" does not answer this fully. Oh hell, maybe it does.

How the hell does NASCAR not see what we're all seeing? I mean Pocono and Dover have put on some snoozers, but they've found ways to keep fans coming back. I think the problem is that the venue has some sort of aura around it because it's Indianapolis. That's kinda causing a few problems in how the race is perceived. The media, NASCAR, and IMS try to build it up. But the truth of the matter is...it's just another race now.

Like Fuzzy said, I guess it's the aura of history at Indy that has NASCAR thinking the way it is. And gently caress cookie cutter tracks.

Maybe have the race April or September?
