If the film does underperform while Luc Besson, for instance, is personally insulated as is his studio, it would be hard to sell a subsequent Luc Besson joint to those distributors who got burned so in many ways it is extremely similar results to if it had underperformed for the studio that had hired him.

Ready Player One is one of the worst books I've probably ever read. That poo poo was like some grade school level writing. And it confirmed just how idiotic the majority of reviewers who rated extremely positive are. Like seriously dude it was one of the most dumb (not in a good way), power fantasy books with a self-insert main character and he's just the coolest cuz he knows everything about 80s nerd poo poo. Plus don't even get me started on the one girl character who is the love interest or the extremely racist Japanese dudes. The trailer also looked like poo poo to be honest. The voice over was loving awful, but thats basically out of the book. I saw that Cline is the screenwriter on this, so you already know its gonna be a bunch of bullshit on that front. Visually it looks alright, but MAN even after using real VR it just makes it look so loving lame. Its gonna bad yall

This sort of foreknowledge that you're going to come face to face with a trifecta of outlier exposure (didn't like the widely praised original book, didn't like the widely liked movie trailer, didn't dig the likely-successful movie) is enough to drive someone low-level mad.

All those nerd kids growing up get to have their hobbies more culturally accepted and maybe help them break out of being socially awkward because they don't have to hide that they play Magic: The Gathering. I think the sexism and other bad -isms will sort themselves out as nerd stuff becomes more mainstream, not that it'll be an easy road. But this isn't the thread for that; I only bring it up because I don't think "nerd culture empowerment" isn't what Ready Player One is about. RP1 is about jamming a needle full of nostalgia into the veins of grown adults who were born in the 80's. It's just a bad power fantasy wrapped in nostalgia.

I doubt people here care it exists, they care that it's popular and makes money. Tons of crappy fanfic exists much worse than RP1 but it's 'harmless' because it isn't widely exposed. There's also always posts like 'I could write a better book in a weekend!' which I think comes from a similar place. GrandpaPants posted:we'll all have to suffer through nerd culture empowerment If you check out the comic movie/GoT discussions around here you'll find that's been going on a while now. It's just different subject matter people worship. 'internet culture/etiquette' and easy nostalgia, I think there's something to be said there for sure, but I don't think that's a nerdy refuge by any means anymore. e: Unrelated but I'd love to see an Anathem movie. Video games are already mainstream. This is why there is now a distinction between normies/casuals and the hardcore gamers. This book is most definitely 100% about nerdy "pop culture" empowerment. The nerd kids who got beat up and made fun of are now in their late teens/20s and 30s. The new generation coming up has accepted that video games are the norm. Its just a power fantasy for older folks but aimed at kids.

It would be boring as hell, stephenson has some cool ideas but he cant write dialogue or a functional story for poo poo,his stories feel like loose conections of stuff hapening with bonus mathematics. More studios need to take a clue from Arrival, adapt more short stories with cool big ideas and let the screenwriters create interesting characters in it. Or just straight up do an adaptation of stars my destination, because goddamn count of montecristo innnnn spaaaaaaceeeeee.

Personally, I find fanfic on a whole more "digestible" than RP1. Digestible is a bad descriptor, but I mean I am cool with the idea of fanfic. Like I mean a piece of fanfic exists because someone just really enjoyed a piece of media and wanted to write out their own ideas. Cline's stuff exists for a totally different reason though, its to list things, to say these things are great, you are better if you like these things, but we will never say anything deeper about these things. Like yeah fanfic as a whole is probably going to have worst actual writing than RP1, but I would argue Cline's work is more soulless. Like its escapism fiction built from escapism fiction, a copy of a copy, totally lacking any ideals.
