I feel pretty confident that anyone who voted for the MTP will also vote for the skinny repeal, and that's definitely the scariest prospect. However, if the House declines to vote for the skinny repeal and they go to conference, then there's a decent chance that the House will demand something that will get a third no vote. Still, the Republican dynamic always seems to be moderates caving to the radicals, and I'm vibing that we'll see that again.

And I would be the first to say that I am still committed to militant, powerful, massive, non-violence as the most potent weapon in grappling with the problem from a direct action point of view. I'm absolutely convinced that a riot merely intensifies the fears of the white community while relieving the guilt. And I feel that we must always work with an effective, powerful weapon and method that brings about tangible results. But it is not enough for me to stand before you tonight and condemn riots. It would be morally irresponsible for me to do that without, at the same time, condemning the contingent, intolerable conditions that exist in our society. These conditions are the things that cause individuals to feel that they have no other alternative than to engage in violent rebellions to get attention. And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it America has failed to hear? It has failed to hear that the plight of the negro poor has worsened over the last twelve or fifteen years. It has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met. And it has failed to hear that large segments of white society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than about justice and humanity.

I think this is a pretty disingenuous way to look at the Democrats' platform. Their actions while in office tend towards actually trying to govern. They might not do it well, or at least do it well consistently enough, but they attempt to govern. Meanwhile, the Republicans' main thing is "if Democrats are for it, it must be bad, so we're against it." Yeah, "both sides" do some lovely things, but when one side is this much worse than the other, I think this both-sides-ism doesn't help anything.

The bill currently on the floor is the house bill, which they do not ever intend to vote on without a massive re-write via amendments) None of this explains your inexplicable aggro to my post (a post which was also true).

That's a good question, although I guess it runs the risk that the Republicans might ditch the fillibuster and then pass the bill out of shear spite? But they barely have the votes for the bill, it's hard to imagine them being able to pull that off...

Yeah, the right already imprisons millions of young men, a disproportionate share of which come from minority communities. Those are the communities which would be most threatening to an actual right authoritarian government in this country (comfortable white college grads who are into Marx aren't taking to the streets if real bullets start being fired), so if push came to shove I'm sure they'd be willing to increase the repression. Liberals and the left can't win a street fight at this moment in American history, and pushing for violence will just be used to justify more repression.

If the GOP doesn't have 50 votes for the Cruz bill, then voila, Dems win.
