I know this opinion is heresy, but I do miss things from No Man's Sky when playing Elite. Like the ship variety, wandering around on planets that aren't desolate empty rocks, alien creatures, base building, the music, black holes...

I feel like if you combined these two games I'd never stop playing.

OK, played in open, did some BH for the CG. I was immediately attacked by another player wing of 3 even though I had no bounty on me and proceeded rather directly to the rebuy screen. Is there a reason I was attacked? I wasn't even challenged. I frankly don't get it.

When you're visiting a community goal, engineer system or a powerplay headquarters you will quickly learn couple of things of Elite's playerbase. People are dicks. However, that also makes Open quite thrilling and a successful evasion from hostile players gives you one hell of an adrenaline rush.

Other people are hell. Always, always and always consider any other player you see to specifically target you for murder. If you see any combat ship turning towards you, assume they're willing to kill you. Even smaller ships are dangerous and should be treated with caution. Interdiction must be considered an attempted murder.

Interdictions:
1. In case you are interdicted by a player, assume their goal is to kill you unless explicitly stated otherwise. The exempts include many of the pirates, who will prompt you with a message.
2. When you see other players around, immediately select your navigation panel, move cursor to some system and exit without selecting that system.
3. When interdicted you have two choices: play the interdiction minigame or submit. Failing the interdiction minigame is not an option. Submitting gives you a shorter FSD cooldown than failure. Those seconds make the difference between successful escape and rebuy screen.
4. When interdicted and submitting, immediately put 4 pips to shields and 2 pips to engines. Assume the other ship is better armed and protected. Do not attempt to fight an interdictor unless you feel absolutely in control of the situation, which for non-PvPers should be never.
5. When interdicted and submitted, open nav panel, klick on your pre-selected system and plot a course. Boost towards the enemy or do evasive manouvers until FSD is charged, align and high wake to another system. Never, ever try to low wake.

This is all very sound advice. The game heavily favors the defender in these encounters. If you want to escape, you will very likely escape before they can manage to kill you. That is if you don't do what donny don't does.

It's a radial!
If you don't want to high-wake out the other tactic is to drop out of super cruise preemptively, before you are interdicted. You'll leave a low-wake signature that the hostile can drop in on, so boost away quickly in normal space.

Several scenarios from here:

1) He drops on your low-wake and you're out of mass lock range so you can safely low-wake out towards your destination.

2) He overshoots your low wake and either has to circle back or loses interest entirely. Go ahead and low-wake out yourself.

After you're back in super-cruise, keep an eye out for that guy, but chances are you may have entered a different instance and can proceed safely to your destination.

If you accept 3 missions the board stops showing any so what you do is refresh and accept the 2 highest you can find, then keep refreshing till you get a board of like 10+ missions and accept them all at once and proceed as normal.

Holy shitballs, I finally managed to upgrade my Vulture's power plant, and could finally put some nice stuff on it like modded shields and thrusters. It's pitch rate is over 61 what-ever-units they are!

I have to use a second ship for exploring / mining / commuting to other bases though as it has a small jump range and not much Optional space. I keep thinking about side/down grading to an Asp Explorer. Once fully equipped it can do over 1000 lightyears before filling up, has a nice jump range, and can have a vehicle bay at the same time.

Asp Explorers are fantastic general-purpose spaceships. You can easily get it a 50 LY range jump with minimal engineering. It can be fitted for doing most basic tasks around the bubble, from hauling and passenger ferrying, to even light combat if you really want to. It's not great at combat, it can't hold the biggest hauls of cargo, and it can't fit luxury passenger cabins, but it can be fitted to do any of it more than adequately. Plus it fits on a medium pad and is not very expensive. And when it comes to an exploration vehicle, it's basically one of the top three choices in flying out to the depths of space. I think its only competition for "best exploration craft" is an exploration Anaconda, or the Diamondback Explorer. I would definitely recommend getting an AspE, and get comfortable with it. You're likely to hold on to it for a long time for its flexibility, even if it's not your primary ship for some things. It will be like a good friend, always dependable and there for you.

In short, A++++ would buy again

I bought a Type 7 to be my income ship while the AspX would be for goofing around but I'm still making more money with the Asp just because of all the missions it can do that the 7 can't.

The station lights are theoretically for helping incoming and outgoing traffic dodge each other (the traffic controller tells you to go towards the green whichever side you're on) but you can probably just go wherever unless there's a REALLY big ship coming in.
