K. Waste posted:No, it's a gimmick film. It's literally no different from The Tingler, or Scream, or any other horror film that deals meta-textually with the spectatorship of horror (which is actually most horror films, when you really get down to it). The "art" in "art film" is short for "artifice".

Maybe he's conflating that really long take after the kid dies with the rest of the movie.

Someone should do a remake of Funny Games where they rewind all the way to before the movie was made and kill the director, and then it ends.

rngd in the womb posted:Everything coming to Netflix/Hulu/HBO Go/Amazon in August Some fun stuff on Netflix; otherwise, it looks like a ho-hum kinda month for additions. Also I don't get this huge debate about Funny Games. Either version is fine, it's an interesting concept overall, and they're both pretty far down the ladder as far as Haneke's repertoire goes.

Yeah, I wouldn't present the film as profundity, but I'm a sadist & film lover so Funny Games US is the confluence of "film I can inflict on other people". Gaspar Noé and Lars von Trier can hit similar notes. I wouldn't say it's my favorite film of Haneke or anything. I've got both versions but prefer the American one myself, got too much love for Michael Pitt

Everything leaving Netflix/Hulu/HBO Go in August Not much will be missed. Looks like HBO Go is the one that's mostly losing the good stuff. And on this note, I wish these lists were somehow already built into their respective services.

Oh man all matrix (matricese?) are on prime?? I'm really considering getting it in addition to Netflix. I tried the free trial a while ago and the interface amd player was god awful though. Somehow worse than Netflix. And does it even have mobile? The flix mobile is actually decent.

Wrong wrong wrong. All 3 are fantastic. Yeah the cgi is goofily dated, especially when he fights the thousand Smiths with the pole, but who cares.

That CGI isn't even dated, I remember thinking it looked like poo poo when I saw that in theaters. E: That said, I did enjoy Reloaded a lot when it came out. The freeway chase was loving great. I kind of soured on it after the third one, though, since a lot of the cliffhanger stuff got resolved unsatisfyingly.

The only thing I like about the second and third Matrix movies is Monica Belucci, the fight scene with medieval weapons, and when Neo flies so reality-bendingly fast he's carrying cars and poo poo in his wake.

you know I never really understood the consensus that the first Matrix film was amazing and then the rest were horrible They all seem about the same to me. They're all CGI heavy action films with a lot of slo-mo and goofy philosophy bits.

The Vosgian Beast posted:you know I never really understood the consensus that the first Matrix film was amazing and then the rest were horrible The original is just tighter, it's a well-oiled machine. The Vosgian Beast posted:you know I never really understood the consensus that the first Matrix film was amazing and then the rest were horrible No. Less is always more, and The Matrix sets up it's mythology and comes to a satisfying conclusion that really doesn't need elaboration. The sequels decided to tell everything that was unnecessary in a convoluted unsatisfying way. Even when I was much younger, seeing both sequels be given one trailer and two release dates so close to each other, I knew it was a cash grab with diminishing returns.

drunken officeparty posted:The Architecht scene is great and I will fight anyone who says otherwise I agree, it's one of the real strong points of Reloaded. It's so densely packed with exposition, which is normally a bad thing, but the way its delivered makes it feel like you have a chance at some new revelation every time you see it. It's the perfect mix between nonsensical jibberish and potentially game-changing epiphanies.
