Just finished watching the third episode of Classroom of the Elite (it's the one that's like a lovely mashup of Oregairu and BakaTest) and holy balls, did the Yuigahama-wannabe revelation caught me off-guard :stare:

Fair enough. So far, the only thing that made me stay was more or less the fact that, as I mentioned before, it felt somewhat like the ill-behaved, bastard child of Oregairu and BakaTest. But here's the thing: In its three episodes, Classroom of the Elite just had three moments that sorta grabbed my attention:
  • The reveal that the teacher was keeping tabs on the dumbass 1-D students in the first episode and called them on their poo poo.
  • The StuCo Prez being disgusted with his sister and almost physically attacking her, before our blank-faced MC guy stopped him and the show turned into a shounen battle anime for all of 10 seconds
  • The fact that the air-headed, friendly girl has a rather hosed-up, unpleasant side to her
It's very much that "Ok, those are ok-to-cool moments" sensation but the rest of the show feels hopelessly dull, those three moments are fighting an uphill battle that they're gonna lose badly. Like, I'm not saying Oregairu is the height of a more down-to-earth high school drama or that BakaTest is some unreachable halcyon of grade-induced class segregation, but goddammit, at least Hachiman and Yukino's rotten personalities + their interactions with 3rd parties had a charm and the way battles were fought in BakaTest was fun and allowed for wacky-hijinks to go down.

ConanThe3rd

Honestly I liked BakaTest better because the goit to not goit ratio was in favour of me not putting a fist through my monitor and, damnit, some episodes of that were genuinely brilliant.

Also Blonde being a psycho is the least surprising twist I've ever seen.

Classroom of the Elite is pretty enjoyable to me so far. There's ususally one show a season that I don't think is especially good but end up liking anyway. I saw that reveal coming a mile away because this is one of those 'the situation isn't quite what it seems' shows, so any characterization they lay on really thick in the first ep is almost certainly going to turn out to be false.

Right now Magical Circle Guru Guru is my show of the season, love that OP too. Though I haven't watched any of Made in Abyss, Welcome to the Ballroom and Kakegurui because I tend to marathon non-CR shows when they're over.

Oh Gamers! is pretty fun too. But the normie guy and his gf are far more interesting than the main dude.

I'm still fine with Classroom of the Elite. It's doing a slow burn but leaving enough hooks that i'm interested in the next week.

Waiting for the shoe to drop where expulsion means repossession of everything owned by the student and their family while they are used as ammo for the ensuing war going on at the same time because, well, the government spent a ton on this failure of a person.

I watched a few episodes of Fate/Apocrypha and Tsurezure Children but realized that in the end I have very little interest in experiencing those stories a second time after already reading the manga. I feel like that's been happening more and more the last couple of seasons, where even if I really enjoyed a given manga it is not a fait accompli that I will watch its anime version. And since there was nothing else I was interested in besides Monogatari which isn't even a TV show it's resulted in another season of not watching anything. It's given me time to catch up on other TV backlogs, at least.

Well, you could feel like that but you'd be wrong!

Nichijou's pacing, atmosphere, presentation, and voice acting are all pitch-perfect, it's easily one of the most consistently great TV anime productions I've ever seen. I've read a lot of the manga too, and while it's also great, the TV series elevates its already-fantastic material into the stratosphere.

It's because they are cause both Keita and Chiaki are dense as poo poo. The anime will rotate between Keita and Uehara, and occasionally the other 3 if they follow the same pattern as the novel, so more of an ensemble cast than just rotating solely around Keita.

Should I watch the first 3 seasons of hellgirl? I've "enjoyed" what I've seen of this season ("enjoyed" being in quotes because it really is rather disturbing) but I've got no idea who the non-Ai characters are or what their roles are.

The pre-existing episodes amount to 32.5 hours of content (78x25min)... really necessary? Is there going to be an overarching plot that I need to understand or is it going to stay episodic?

It's largely episodic, but some Ai Enma plot occurs here-and-there throughout that climaxes towards the end of each season.

If you're curious about what little bits of backstory they dole out you could always just watch those episodes. Beyond that... It comes down to how many episodes of the show's style you can stomach. There isn't any greater moral purpose to what Hell Girl and her entourage does and this latest episode wasn't the first time that's been brought up. However considering we're on the 4th season now, you can guess how much difference previously raised moral qualms have made. Watch it until you get tired of it is my advice, it won't affect the current season much one way or another.

tl;dr Hell Girl is an allegory about capitalism

I'm the lead trumpet player, playing loud and high is all I know how to do.

Early season 3+episode roundup of shows without threads:

Action Heroine Cheer Fruits - Very narrow show, but definitely cute fun and enjoyable for those that want it. I just don't think I'm in that zone. Probably drop.

Aho Girl - Traversing the comedy tightrope walk for now, but boy one wrong misstep and the entire show could derail. Continuing hesitantly.

Centaur's Worries - It's all about those random one-line quips about short selling stocks or government regulations, etc. Keep.

Cleanliness Boy Aoyama-kun - Good schtick, funny stuff. Keep.

Dive!! - I really want to watch this show. It's almost really good. And watching the poor girl slowly realize her boyfriend is as straight as a rainbow is schadenfreude at its best. But 1) it feels too much like a cringe commercial, no, a plea for the Japan 2020 Olympics and 2) the pacing and overall structure is a bit too far off. Dropped.

Gamers! - ...is actually a decent fun romcom. Needs spectacular editing and timing though, and is only barely making it. Keep. (fake edit: ...is this the Big Bang Theory of anime, but without popularity)

Hina Logi - Something just feels off about this show. It's not hooking me. I'm going to miss the ending segments with the teachers though. Dropped.

Konbini Kareshi - It's amazing how low the budget is for this show. I feel bad for them. Dropped.

Love and Lies - I powered through 3 episodes with high hopes, but the interesting concept is not executed anywhere near par. There doesn't seem to be an overall vision for the show, and they can't decide what they want to be, dropping the ball everywhere instead. Dropped.

Restaurant to Another World - Again, only watch this show with or directly after a nice meal. Do not watch late at night or without sustenance. Keep.

Tsurezure Children - Also a romcom but I argue it's in a different space as Gamers! and both can be enjoyed in parallel. Keep.

Well feast your eyes on these hot takes then.

Ninja Girl & Samurai Master: I'm like six episodes behind, but it's still good.

Sakura Quest: Has started to grow on me in the second cour. It's not as good as Shiroboka or Iroha, but it's got its own kind of charm.

My Hero Academy: It's good, but the current arc doesn't really do it for me. I hope we'll get some more classroom scenes before the season is over.

Hina Logi(c): This show is really dumb, and really cute, and they still haven't used their magical girl skills for anything more serious than "cleaning the bath" or "growing some flowers".

Restaurant to Another World: Ehhhhhh. Every half-episode is "exposition, exposition, food porn, exposition", except the exposition isn't interesting and the food porn isn't interesting either.

Knight Is And Magic (or maybe it's & Magic of Knight?): Surprisingly fun. The past two episodes have just been the dorky robot otaku building up his robot army, but it looks like the next episode will have some action.

Swordboys: I was ready to drop this, but apparently poo poo gets real in episode five? I guess I could watch two more episodes of the bland fujoshi bait show.

Tsuredure Children: Show of the season so far.

Aoyama-kun: Runner-up of the season so far.

Gamers: Ehhhhhh. I hate the protagonist, but there have been a couple of decent jokes so far.

Yokai Apartment: Ehhhhhh. Just ehhhhhh. Can't even formulate an opinion on this show.

New Game!: More of the same, but still really good.

Classroom of the Elite: Not great, but surprisingly interesting. I'm genuinely curious to see where they'll take this concept, so I'm going to keep watching this.

Centaur's Worries: Has troubles with comedic timing, but otherwise pretty good. It occasionally does the same "social commentary by way of monsters" thing that Demi-chan did, though not as well.

Already dropped: 18if, Fastest Fingers First.

In conclusion, I watch a lot of anime I don't really like.
