Without Naota it just won't be the same, even if Haruko is in it.

I guess it would be better if they found another, equally good-yet-somewhat-obscure band to rock the soundtrack? But since there's no way of knowing ahead of time how well the music would fit--and the Pillows fit the original FLCL like a glove--I can't blame them for going with the known quantity. I have to confess... the truth is... I've rewatched FLCL like 6 times over the years since I saw it in high school and I've never really, like, liked it or "got" it the same way other people did. I dunno. I tried to, but I guess it's just not for me, in the end. vv But that being said, I enjoy the animation style and I really respect it for what it is. I'll definitely be checking this out when it airs, but I'm skeptical if it'll be able to recapture that strange, undefinable je-ne-sais-quoi that marked the first one as something truly unique on the anime landscape.

The thing is that FLCL wasn't actually about the crazy bullshit, it was about Naoto, so if you don't have an equally strong lead it's just going to be FLCL 2: The Search For More Money. And the odds of telling 2 equally strong coming of age stories in a row are.....not great.

I don't expect new FLCL to fully capture the magic of the original but it's probably gonna at least be an entertaining show

Well like I said, the odds aren't great, but it's not like it's a given they can't. There's no rule or natural law that says that the sequel has to be poo poo. It's overwhelmingly likely to be poo poo, but there have been surprises before. Keep hope alive!

Admittedly I was younger and dumber but I hated it so much I didn't think I'd ever bother watching it again. It wasn't until I read this: http://www.avclub.com/tvclub/flcl-fooly-cooly-66724 that I finally got it. After reading this I rewatched the show, and on rewatching it all made so much more sense, and I now rate FLCL very highly as an anime. It's the first time that reading about something I watched actually changed my opinion of it. That said, it's a series that did not/does not need a sequel. Happy if it spawns a great OST at least, but don't have high hopes they'll capture lightning in a bottle twice in row. Soul Reaver fucked around with this message at 06:47 on Jul 28, 2017 |

Nathilus posted:Wrongthink alert. Nah. The fact that they're going with a band that is now known very well by the intended audience instead of finding a new obscure band to elevate is p lame and makes me think they're gonna try to coast on that "hey, remember this!?" style of revisiting an old series.

Because when you find a band that syncs perfectly with your aesthetic, with a strong appeal to your intended audience, allowing you to maintain continuity with the original while (hopefully) pursuing a new narrative, the obvious thing to do is abandon it all in the hope you can find someone else who can almost give you the same experience.

Sakurazuka posted:Other western funded anime includes the first GitS movie and the second season of Big O Big O S2 is actually an example of what I'm worried about. My concern here is how much power Adult Swim will assume in shaping FLCL 2 creatively. Also I think Big O S2 worked because it reunited much of the original creators and was made within 3 years after the original, while FLCL 2 is nearly 15 years removed and with almost none of the original staff
