Posted in the other thread, but I saw some fairly insane aeros last week. Went to Международный авиационно-космический салон, the International Aviation and Space Show, or MAKS, and also the Central Air Museum in Moscow. Here is a great big pile of pictures in mostly bad weather, but there are a few I am pleased with, and several that you won't see every single day back home. I wonder what they saw in the data that lead to enlarging those compared to the WWII models? All the post war designs and refits definitely jacked up the size so some lesson learned must have popped up.

I'd guess part of it is to maintain control when you have an engine out. Need more stabilizer to keep things pointing straight when you have bigger engines (and so a bigger imbalance when things go bad)

Even with all engines operating, more power is destabilizing in pitch and yaw. This is because the prop always turns airflow to align with the longitudinal axis. If you, say, yaw off-axis to the right, that means it turns air to the left. This leftward momentum change of the air, means that there's an equal rightward force on what pushed it that way, i.e., the prop, which is ahead of the CG. Thanks, that makes sense. Should have considered it would be connected to upping engine power, which is the real common factor across those post-WW2 upgrades and refits.

Is there any reliable info on whether the PAK-FA is even an upgrade over whatever the latest Su-27 revision is? Is the new body shape purely for show or does it actually improve something? Is it supposed to have any new fancy electronics that they haven't already shoved into another plane?

I've seen computer models (made by amateurs on the internet) that show that the pak-fa RCS is in the ball park of an f-22, maybe only 2x or 3x off. . However, these models just don't even bother to try an model things like RAM or engine intake geometry, which are the actual hard parts to get right.

The FSW trainer is a KB SAT SR-10, it was in competition for a Russian basic trainer contract that ended up going to the Yak-152, a diesel-prop plane. It is adorably tiny, and really simple, the cockpit hinges look like something from Home Depot, and it is probably Very cheap. Flew the hell out of it with an interim engine, would probably go like a scalded (subsonic) dog with the NPO Saturn AL-55 engine proposed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KB_SAT_SR-10 The Hind flew with asymmetrical stores both days I saw it, so I assume it was marketing. Demonstrating that it works fine with whatever you can afford to hang off it. Would have been a lot more likely to get my business if they had let a dozen Vikir missiles go downrange. They also flew a Yak-130 all tooled up with six hardpoints and two wingtips worth of hate and discontent. Looked pretty cool.

You know that discussion that comes up about how we should re-engine the B-52? Turns out survivability has nothing to to with it. Nor does cost. If Pratt inclined to re-engine the B-52, the military opens up the contract to other companies to bid on. Need that contract exclusivity.
